Plasterboard over shower

Hi All,

First post so kopefully in the right area.

I've had problems with our shower - water got in behind the tiles and destroyed the platerboard - house is only 8 years old.

Anyway - I got a plasterer in to replace the board once I'd removed the old tiles and plaster.

My question is this - he has installed the new board over the lip of the shower base whereas the old plasterboard sat on top of the lip. He's gone on to put plaster between the board the shower tray - within the lip.

I don;t have the experience to challenge the guy as I think it is wrong and want him to make it right before I get the tiler in to finish as I'm not confident enough to tile in a shower that will be hit with water.

Any thoughts and advice gratefully received.

Got any pictures? I'm sure others are following, but not me.....

Also, regardless of what happens - the plasterboard should be tanked, grout alone between the tiles WILL let water through eventually and cause the same problem again.......

As Billy the Goat has said, tank all walls in shower areas with a waterproof coating,

It's a simple 2 part compound that you mix to 2 different consistencies. One is a thick one, much like pollyfilla, which you use for all corner joints (covered in scrim) and any holes/screws/nails in the board. You then dilute this with the rest of the compound to make into a rollable paste.

Takes about 1hr to tank your average 6m shower area and you can tile after 30 mins.

I'm not sure how you mean he's not used the lip so a picture would definately help in this case.

I managed to get a couple of pictures cropped to size so they would upload.

"base cropped" is the shower base and the applied board over the lip and plastered in.

"out of true cropped" is the shower door frame with at least a 10mm gap from top to bottom.

I think this is completely wrong and want it fixed in properly, jut checking if I'm correct.

The board is about 10mm out of true at the base because of this, making fitment of door frame impossible.

I think the guy has just totally bodged it and want it fixed.

OMG, what a mess! Have you actually paid the "plasterer"? If not get it ripped out and done properly.

Not any more - I sacked him today. paid him for materials used and told him to get lost.

I'm not a diy genius but I know I'd have done a better job - paying a professional is supposed to entail in a superior quality job, right?

Took a look on the Coram web site today - the shower base has upstands which means the board should be placed above the upstand with tiles going below once fitted.

Now have a lovely job trying to find someone else. or doing it myself.

Is it worth trying to rescue board by trimming just above level of upstand so it goes flat or just whip out and replace then tank (in both cases)?

Know any good tilers/plasterers in Central Scotland near Stirling.
