Cowboy Tradespeople

Post by scot-canuck »

I swear my old man is cursed, seemingly EVERY tradesman he hires is friends with the lone ranger......even the ones he gets references for.
The latest being:
I've spent the last few days trying to find a Live / Neutral cross in his upstairs lighting circuit....but looking at the rest of the circuit (particularly the add ons that the sparks he hired have done) I'm now seriously considering a rewire of the circuit, likely be quicker than trying to figure out which mistake is the source of the problems
Why?
230V inner cores showing without outer sheath in multiple places in the loft, terminal strips simply wrapped with a layer of insulating tape and with bare copper showing on almost every strip (L and N, earths at times just twisted together without sleeving), no chocboxes used anywhere, random cut off cables laying all over the place, lids left off enclosures, metal enclosures without earthing terminals, random junction boxes here there and everywhere, cables joined as above on top of insulation, the list just goes on and on and on.
This done by the owner of one of the bigger and seemingly better local sparks companies (though I was on a course recently with one of his senior journeymen...late 50s and scored 25% average on an open book exam.... ::b ::b )

Also found one 3+E that the plumber cut off, didn't terminal strip and left loose in the junction box beside the combi in the loft.....no idea what it was meant for, (tested dead....though might just kick the heating on to check its definetely dead and not just forgotten about)

Previously:
Random long length of conduit piping left loose inside a wall....what is going on with that I have no idea (especially as its in a recently built stud wall which had no conduit piping used within it)

Radiator pipework coming up at random angles (pipe holes drilled without any recourse to measurement or checking against the radiator so the pipes pop up from under the floor either slanting sharply away from or towards the walls...I think 1 piece of pipe is actually straight....luck I think...), most have pipework at different angles on the same radiator.

Radiator Pipe sleeving cut way too short

Compression fittings on several radiators not tightened properly so they started to weep not long after installation (quick nip up with a spanner sorted it, but you would think for £7K+ worth of work they would check that everything was properly tightened?)

Floorboards cut like a dog urinating in snow by said plumber and not properly screwed down afterwards, I could cut straighter after 2 bottles of rum than they managed sober...

Joiners having to alter the flooring pattern and add door mat holders as they ordered too little flooring for the job

Stopcock boxed in without any access to it being left

Flooring being cut 3 to 4 mm shy of the door treads, meaning filler had to be used to hide it later

Roof tiles that had to be relaid due to visibly large gaps and being nowhere near properly laid (another visit from the dog urinating in snow) Oddly managed to do a decent job at attempt 2.

Wall that had to be altered as the window was well below the permitted height from the floor

Harling that had to be chipped away to get a window to open

Windows that had to be drilled post installation to add vents ( as the contractor "forgot" to specify them during manufacture)

Shower neutral connection left loose, causing the cabling to melt and the switch to weld itself on then the switch went with a loud bang (yeah that was fun....happened when I was in the shower....)

Metalclad sockets in garage not earthed

Neutral of a cable connected to the CU but with the live insulating taped off in the CU :wtf: :wtf:

Fluorescent light battens with their earth terminals disconnected in the garage

I wonder if the old man refused to buy pegs or something.....there must be a reason....surely?!?

They probably applied the age old maxim of "The painter will sort it".

Exploding showers are though fun aren't they.
