Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
Hi, when I researched, before doing my family bathroom I found this type of info, hence the remarks, ( put WPB Ply into search) or example:-

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
hmm the more i read about tiling onto plywood the less i like the idea.
dry it out, it shrinks, get it wet it swells and rots.
I know sealing the bottom and edges is supposed to stop it getting wet, but it does nothing for the top face.

tiling-on-floor-boards-ply-or-not-to-ply-t29279.html
floorboard-type-tiling-suitability-t30919.html
I did read the below, couldn't find a local source of 25mm ply
http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/tilin ... floors.htm
I'm in two minds to fall back to overboarding either the boards or more likely the ply with backer board.
however a tiling forum does suggest using DTW's / Matt's answer of ardex flex 7001 and the P51 primer for straight onto ply...
i'll see how the bank account is looking, locally can get 18mm ply for £28.50 and £15.75 to do the entire bathroom floor.

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
happier now i've had a nosey at ardex manf. instructions.
http://www.ardex.co.uk/ardex_x7001.asp
http://www.ardex.co.uk/pdfs/fixing%20ce ... 0tiles.pdf
i'll add noggings every 12" / 300mm as the gap between joists is more than this

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
Did not want to put you off DTW's suggestion, only concerned at the quality of ply used and WBP would be a minimum I would say without the backer board, add what noggins you can.
My Grand-kids love jumping on our landing, WBP, but again a lot of copper pipes below, no room for extra noggins or screws, so it sounds like a drum, the vibration soon loosens what grip the few screws have and I am back to creaking, however saving for the 9mm underlay and new carpet.

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
nope nothing as bad as that,
i've got the HW & Cold to move off the skirting to below floor level but this is parallel to the joist so will fit in the gap,
till it reaches bath, then i'll bring it up through the floor and run roughly same as what i've got currently
but i'm moving the pipes back as the front (hot) gets in the way of the curved bath panel.
there are notches in the top of the joist for a towel radiator off the CH, but thats it.
Noggins sound good to me!
i've got a tub of decking screws, will these do?
or should i get something beefier, was going to one top and bottom of each end of the nog.

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
I bought a tub of green cheap decking screws from Wicks for the floors but despite there being a free pozi bit inside they did not drive nicely and are not good for repeat in out driving but give yours a try, I used a more expensive twin thread self countersinking variety.
To add, if the decking screws are threaded all the way then they can be a pain if you are not pre-drilling holes as they cause the ply to ride up!
To be fair Wicks Easy Drive Screws are better; B & Q rapidrive and Screw-Tite are nicer to use.
Personally I prefer the 5.0 size but 4.5 will do.

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
i'll let you know when i get home, they're not threaded for the full length,
otherwise would ride up as you say, then it's just resting on the screw rather than the joist.
they are however long uns!, was gonna use these for the noggings rather than the ply.

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
Progressing with the plumbing
quick question,
i've got what appears to be round edged quarry tiles as a window cill,
they're not in my photo's yet, i'll try and take one tonight.
they're sticking out from the current wall line by about 8 - 12 mm,
what can i use to cut these down in situ?
i've got an oscillating tool with carbide grit blade, will that manage it?? or will i have to borrow an angle grinder / other?
or should i just remove them (go at them with a chisel etc)? (some are partially set into the wall either side the window)

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
Point well made Aeromech, Ditra matting (Substrate movement and waterproofing membrane) can be used, but 7001 & primer is ample :)
If you want super protection, go for the Ditra, but it really isn't needed.
For the quarries, you'll have to take them off, grind down the excess (angle grinder with carbide wheel) and restick them (generic wall adhesive and fill the gaps with the same grout as floor)
YGPM RE: floor tiles and shizzles, can't do a better price on the walls unfortunately :( tried my best!
Cheers!

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
p.s. the quarries are only the substrate, it's an old house!
it did have a god awful plastic cill that sat 2 inch proud of the wall and 3 inch either side, took that off and found the quarries underneath.
i'll be tiling with same as wall for the actual finished cill (so tiles on tiles?)
Cheers for PM and effort on the wall tiles, replied

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
tiles on tiles, make sure that you give the tiles a good clean first, and rough them up with sandpaper prior to tiling. Ensure tiles are fully fixed to wall, no hollow voids etc.
You're going to have a bit of a nasty edge on the boxed in window sill, get some tile trim (chrome square 10mm would do the job) and put it on the edge, tons more pleasing to the eye and really finishes it off.
another PM has been sent to you again!
EDIT: Have you seen the BCT tiles in the flesh? They weren't what I was expecting to see (pictures looked like they were raised ridges, they're actually just glittery bits, dissapointed as I wanted these for our new place :\)
Cheers!

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
Cheers for that, the quarries, they've got some gloss flaking off it, might take one up and see what's underneath before i commit to squaring them up
the BCT tiles, yes i've got samples of the "white" (looks cream in artificial light) and the black the flesh, the magpie.... missus... went "sparkly"
the lighter stripes in them have glitter set in them, other than that, looks like a striped tile (random length stripes)
they have got plain gloss ones as well which i might use to contrast against, i've still got to get a pattern ok'd with her for the walls yet before i order
planning on using trim on the window edge, was looking at curved chrome but box might fit in better with the square mosaics

Re: replacing bathroom floor with ply plus other queries
always go with square trim in a modern style bathroom, round looks naff nowadays, especcially with black & white mosaics!
I'll send your bits over now.
you'll have to put piccies up when it's done :)
Cheers
