acrylic kitchen wall panel

Evening peoples just wondering if any of you have any experience in fitting Acrylic wall panels from this company http://www.thesplashbackpeople.com/stai ... lic-panels.
A work colleague of my wife has bought these,and what he is saying is it backing with the colour on is peeling off .Leaving just clear plastic
I would have thought they would be a solid colour all the way through.Also he is saying they reckon its all right for a splashback behind hob

Just seen this one. I was at a house yesterday evening where they'd done just that. Bad idea. 18 months on and the acrylic behind the hob area is going brown, I suspect in part because they have a girt great wok burner (6kw or so) in the middle of their gas hob. They were asking if I could get the brown stain out...... Needless to say the firm who did the original instal is no longer with us. At least the rest of the splashbacks seem in reasonable condition, apart from a few scratches here and there.

One thing I noticed is that they had made a good job of sealing the splashbacks. I'd suggest that if the paint is peeling then they may not have been properly degreased before painting or that the wrong type of paint was used (I'm told that screen printing inks contain a mild acid etch to overcome peeling), that they possibly don't have a protective coat over the top of the colour coat (which is how a traditional glass sign writer would do it, it's also what they do with mirrors) and that they may not have been adequately sealed after installation. In an ideal world solid colour acrylic is obviously the more durable choice, but the range of colours is limited and the surface glossiness never seems to be as good.

If it were me I'd have gone for glass splashbacks with stainless steel behind the wok burner (and yes, I know it will discolour with time) - glass is far less likely to scratch and stainless steel withstands heat well.

Sorry no help on the plastic splashback as I think they look crap and i'd never put arcylic behind a hob desapite what they claim.

It would have been interesting to see where the paint was peeling and why. My guess is that it is close to heat sources, i.e behind the hob and any under cupboard lighting, the arcylic would be flexing in the heat and the paint can't cope with it.

If it was me i'd be firing this back at the manufacturers as it's not fit for purpose. That site also seems quite expensive for what they do... they are charging £80 for a 600x700 painted MDF splash back when you can buy glass for that price!
