Wiring an Aquarium

Post by matt »

Hi,

A slightly unusual question... I want to wite up an aquarium (e.g. the filter, heater etc) in a safe and also fairly compact way. All the components currently have plugs fitted and some need to be attached to a timer.

Component list (on timer):
Lights 1 (= a single supply to 2 x 15w flourescent tubes)
Lights 2 (= a single suppy to 1 x 15w flourescent tube)
CO2 solenoid.

Component list (not timed):
Filter
Heater
Heated undergravel cable

I would like install 2 x double sockets in the cabinet (suppled via flex from the wall outlet), plug a timer in to one of the outlets, the feed from which would supply a junction box and in turn the lights and solenoid (i.e. hard-wired in to the junction box). The remaining 3 components would simply be plugged in to the remaining 3 outlets.

The question... how can I tell whether the 2 lights plus the solenoid will be OK hard-wired rather then seperately fused???

Cheers

Matt

why not just plug a four way adaptor into the timer and then you havent got to cut any plugs off

Ah, forgot to mention... The tank cabinet does not have sufficient gaps in the rear panel to pass a plug through - would you believe it! Thought about modding the cabinet but the hard-wired option gives me a more compact in-cabinet solution in any case.

All done - as per original plan. The plug top plugged in to the timer is fused at 3amps and no problems protecting the solenoid and lights. All looks pretty neat - even if I do say so myself

Thanks for the help & suggestions.
