van back doors

Post by handyman »

every van i looked at was about 6 years old, and every single one had knackered stops for the back doors...............including the one i bought

Is there anything better than a bit of chain on a hook as a fix them? Thats what i'm thinking may be best, as you can unhook if required, to fully open the door from 90 to 180 degrees.

Will chain work anyway? Once you go past the 90 degree point, the extra distance the chain will have to go will be like nothing?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Very few of them seem reliable in the long term. If the actual door is still in good shape and not damaged, replace the roller/arm

Not sure what it is on yours- mines a simple piece of steel bar that clips into a sturdy plastic bracket.

you dont secure the chain near to the hinge point as this will give the door to much leverage

you secure say 10" away from the hinge on both the door and opening so when the door is open at 90% you have a triangle :thumbright:

Ah - Lateral thinking :thumbright: - in my head I had "put chain in position of old stays".
I had to replace the stay on my rear door to allow it to open from its maximum 60 Deg all the way to 90 Deg !

If you had bought a decent van you would not have this problem

My vito may be going rusty, but the doors work fine

90 degrees is usualy ok . Unless you have you van loaded by B& Q staff with a fork lift  so fix at 90 with the option of 180 if required
