Hi all
I've been asked to replace the tiles in a kitchen- splashback about 2' high around 1 1/2 walls, and up to wall cupboards on the other wall.
Obviously the old tiles could do with coming off, but I'm afraid the plasterboard will end up toast, and replacing it will be a nightmare without ripping the entire kitchen out. It's a fairly new build (last 10 years) and I think the sub frame is metal, so it's not easy to just add some noggins for new plasterboard.
The customer would put up with double thickness tiles, with a deep trim, but it would be better not to (obviously), though under the cupboards, it wouldn't be noticeable.
Any advice? (including tell them I can't do it).
Thanks
Removing tiles on plasterboard

Were it on a wood frame, I would have no problem, as I could easily add the necessary noggins to fit the new board to. can you just add to steel frames the same way?

Re: Removing tiles on plasterboard
You can put noggins in with metal studs. There is a length of thin guage metal plate you can use to span multiple studs, also.
3X1 batten can be used between studs to provide fixing points to the free ends of the boards.
You can do the same above but using metal track.......quicker and cheaper solution.
you can use track as a proper noggin and crimp it to the stud, if you have a crimping tool.

Thanks, this was the advice I needed, as not familiar with metal studs.
No need for an insult when someone doesn't think they know it all.

Re: Removing tiles on plasterboard
Have a look at this video Biker G http://www.knaufdrywall.co.uk/product-r ... l-sections It will give you an idea about these types of partition walls. Taking the tiles off will probably take the paper based face off the plasterboard and in all probability the plaster core will break down. You will see from the video that the metal sections will allow you to screw noggins is so that you can fix new PB to the damaged area ready for the tiles. No reason why you could not do it with your level of experience.
