The back butter buddy...Any opinions/thoughts..

Recently stumbled across this handy gadget and was wondering what your thoughts were..



Seems like a cracking idea to me but tiling ain't my game

Load of rubbish, it's very easy to back butter a tile in your hand even large format, when your working in bathrooms the last thing you want is another tool in there taking up valuable space or have to mo e it around. A solution to a non problem

It made sense to me with large rooms with big heavy tiles and loading the gadget up with multiple tiles at a time but I see your point..

I'm just a fan of helpful gadgets

As we speak tonight I'm currently tiling a bathroom in 15 x 600 x 400 limestone and they are far from light, of course everyone needs back buttering and all I can say is I wouldn't want one of those in the room and its not even a small bathroom!

I have had a back butter buddy for years. Extremely good piece of kit to have and easy to move around.


















It's called my thigh. i kneel down on one knee. Tile held with one hand and rested on my thigh. I can tip it up as the trowel gets to the edge also and this means that I do not get the same problem that numpty gets...........adhesive spilling onto the edge of the tile. No arm fatigue either.

Nothing wrong in being ole skool.

means I can put a circular hole in a tile with two hammers and don't need a £200 gadget to do it lol.

Although due to using cement based adhesives most of the time, I also sometimes put the tile on top of the bucket to back butter it. One bit of equipment for two jobs.

To be modernist in my approach to your question. NO I can't see a benefit. Might as well put it on the bucket, adhesive tub, hop up, box of tiles, washboy, bath that already has ply on it for protection etc etc.

Save your money Wes and buy a different tool. Akin to paying £600 for a mitre saw to do flooring when you still need to buy a jigsaw and a jigsaw does all the cuts anyway.

I'm not buying one, I don't do enough tiling, maybe once a year. Just looked handy for you guys and wondered what your opinions would be..

If I see anything that might make my job easier, I'm all over it personally. I can see where you're coming from on this one.

I'm not should it's on the same level as buying a £600 mitre saw ROC..To me it looks like a £30 bit of kit max, might be wrong like.

Totally agree about the saw to my jiggy's though. Unless it's a big job, I do find myself using my jiggy a lot!!

I only ever use the jigsaw. But the main point of the comparison was why have two tools to do two jobs when you can have one to do both. Half the amount to get out, get in the way and to put away.

People will undoubtedly buy the back butter buddy. After all people buy tile stands to support a batten.

Well, the clear argument there ROC is if I had 500 piece of flooring to cut, with out a shadow of a doubt I'd be using my chop saw. I know it's big and bulky but compared to cutting all that wood with a jigsaw, it's really pretty obvious. If I had a small room i.e. say a small lounge, I'd favour my jiggy. Less weight, less messing about. The link with this BBB that I can see, as a laymen tiler, is if I had 500 tiles to fit (maybe heavy one's at that), I could see the huge advantage of this apparatus. Fair enough, a small bathroom, no point. However, to avoid strain I can see this being a very handy thing on big jobs. If you watched near the end of the video you would have seen him multi stacking the tiles. I can certainly see, on a two man job that having a kicker back buttering and loading would be ideal.

Probably best compared to something like carrying bricks up a ladder. If you've only got a small job you may handball the bricks, if you've got a large job, you may want to use something that's quicker, easier and takes the load of. A bit of the ole common ay
