Roof Joists

I have an outbuilding that is a 169 years old. It is very big. I would like to strengthen the the roof with uprights and cross members for storage. the rafters at the Apex are crossed over, and would make the cross members uneven. can you help.

could you space the cross members off, with a offcut, to take up the cross over distance?

I think also a call to a stuctural engineer may be in order.
