Server limitations for 1&1 website
Hi,
My host is 1&1. When I first set up my website, I chose to use their click-n-build application to install wordpress. Now I am trying to update to the latest wordpress platform and have just been sent this message from the support department..
'For security reasons, the following changes and modifications are not possible in Click-n-Build applications:
Installation of new templates, new plugins, new modules, new components, or new language packages.
Insertion of custom source code (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or PHP) in preinstalled templates or other places in Click-n-Build applications.'
Anyone have any ideas of a way around this or questions I can ask the support department as they only answer what is asked and I'm not totally clear on what I'm asking for?

Just to add to this post. I've just had a reply from 1&1 support reading :
'The best thing that we can do is to manually install wordpress so that you can edit the back end of your website. However by doing this you need to recreate your website after installing. We can backup your database so you need to create a new database and import the backup.'
Seems like 1&1 support ain't that bad after all in this instance. Now I've just got to go and learn how to create a database..Sounds scary

My 2p worth You are now finding out why you should not use "diy website companies" you can only use what they offer and this also means the limitations they have.
If you go to a web hosting company you can install what you like (within reason)
Now you are seeming to learn more about websites, I would suggest you go else where. I just checked their site, if you are paying £9.99 / month, go elsewhere, that's far too much.

It's all in the game..
I pay £4.99 per month. I have to say, I have learnt a lot and had some decent support from them. I wasn't aware of anything in tinterweb land so they were a good stepping stone and I intend to use their hosting service for the next year, while I learn. As you can see I'm starting to peel away but I'm doing it in a way that suits me to aid my learning curve.
Diy website's for someone that wants to get a website up quick and knows nothing and I mean diddly squat about code, links, correct file management or anything are great.
As we are on a forum that deals with diy'ers all the time, the analogies are clear.

I am not on commission but I just compared your suggested company to the one I use, yours costs £5 / month for decent web hosting mine costs £21 / year. Both are + cost of domain name. I am sure there must be others out there.

I used to have a dedicated server with 1 and 1

It's fun when you cancel the service as they take another months money from you, they then try and take it again (so you have to cancel your debit card).
Then you get the letters from the debt collection agency, then the letters from the solicitors

Thanks mate..It depends what browser is viewing it but your right, I don't want that happening on any browser really. The menu is a plugin. It should only do it with the front page but I did mean to correct that the other day. Thanks for that ...I was sold when I chose 1&1 with the dazzling colours and bright wording...I'm still at the stage where everything I do is a little unknown and I don't want to make to drastic a change. Changing hosts and transferring server content if that's the right wording etc is still a really overwhelming thought. That's one of the reason's why I'm cagey about changing at the minute Chez. Plus I've just rolled over for another year. I can handle all the money palaver but I don't want to loose all the work I've put in up to now. I'm sure you know what I mean. The sites only small but I'd feel gutted if the content disappeared. I need to learn more about file downloads and backups etc first. Really? I never had a problem with 1&1, I requested to cancel my domain after a year at the start (because it had 2011 in it so would be no good the next year), they said fine.
Fast forward a year, they took the money out.
Phoned up, within 5 minutes they had refunded the money and given me an apology, some really friendly american type, I thought even though they f*ck up the service was sh*t hot.

I agree with you to some degree Megaross. It's been great in some instances to call on support for guidance, however, with them being the first hosting company I've used, I'm unsure if support to that degree is the norm. I have to say they've not always been forthcoming with the type of help, and feel I've had to pry the information out of them, but I suppose they're limited to the help they can give, as it's structured to keep people with them. Plus the company seem pretty big so I'd guess that the support team has quotas to fill so that might be the reason for short sharp answers to questions. Also as a newbie, my questions were probably not asked in the right way.
I can't knock them to much as I've personally learnt a lot from the experience.
