Grout/Adhesive for over bath shower

Post by scot-canuck »

So next task post painting the new place is tiling the above the bath (putting in an above bath mixer shower), which is something I've done....4 odd years ago so looking for up to date advice on grout/adhesives?
Walls have been painted by previous residents, so planning to key the walls, mark a level line / temp fix a level batten, adhesive and then 148x148mm tiles (bathroom ain't huge and personally prefer smaller tiles), grout and silicon

Wickes own brand waterproof adhesives and grout- ok stuff or do you guys other better cost effective recommendations?
Unibond combined adhesive and grout - gimmick or useable?
Bathroom has a window and an extractor fan

No such thing as waterproof adhesive, definately no ready mixed adhesive in a wet area, you need a cement based powdered adhesive and grout. If there is paint on the walls this needs to be washed or sanded off, in a wet area it is a good idea to use a tanking kit as water will work its way through to the plaster walls and your tiles will eventually fall off

Fair points....however parents place (and my self in other houses) Tilers never bothered with tanking and the tiles in the shower enclosure are still stuck *Extremely* well to the wall with no signs of water damage despite being used multiple times per day everyday, tiles have been in place since the early 90s....I figure good maintenance is as or is more importantant than tanking.....

:withstupid: Absolutely correct about the good maintenance being more important than tanking. However there are times when tile selection also plays an important role.

Normally I will only use cement based adhesive in a bathroom. Tubbed is reserved for kitchens.

If you ever used an all-in-one grout and adhesive I'll personally hunt you down and chop your hands off!

:withstupid: yeah, with the wrists too so that we can attach them to a drill and use them as a stirrer for the cement based addy.
