If your considering apple iPad due to the way Microsoft operates I suggest you look again as apple and Microsoft are just as bad as each other. I suggest that you butty a tablet with android installed it is a free open source software with much more free choice in the store

I recommend a Asus nexus 7 by Google ih have one so am taking from experience an I did a lot of research before getting one

You can always clean up your computer by booting a live linux disc. Once it's running you can download a virus checker etc. and get it to sort out your hard disc.
Or you could install linux and use it instead of Windows.
Choose a good password which means at least 12 characters these days. Crackers take over a few 100,000 Windows PC's and can find an 8 character password in minutes.
Use _ + - numbers upper and lowercase letters and at present it will take a very long time to find it.
If you run Linux then install fail2ban which quickly detects attempts to break into your computer and stops any access from the IP address for increasing periods of time with each failed attempt to login.

Meanwhile I`m doing sort of alright in safe mode.I have to keep reminding the lodger how to log in the new way if they`re doing anything that requires passwords,because the crooks log in at the same time(they haven`t accessed our passwords....yet,although we`ll change them once all necessary security is in place using buteman`s advice)

There`s a problem with watching iplayer,which is running with the sound slightly out of synch with the picture.Same with Ewetoob and coursework vids.Any ideas anyone how to get vid and sound in synch again on computer?Also Skype is rubbish too.....sound is terrible.Pic;well probably just requires a new webcam.

The Malware thingy which wine-o put me on to is working well,although the scan has to be done manually.Scan always come up clean in safe mode but if anyone`s been on normal mode and then I scan again whilst back in safe mode,it reveals four infestations incl a tojan.So my question is,which is the best free firewall out of the selection pointed out to me earlier?Am I right in assuming a good firewall will stop threats at entry,∴ negating Malware having to be set onto them?

Safemode runs with reduced, non essential services and startup applicactions - it's not designed to run like this permanantly.

You really should just bite the bullet and either reinstall the operating system or get someone to do it for you.

It reaches a stage where you need to consider how bad has the infection become - to me, it sounds pretty terminal. Can you REALLY be sure that everything has been removed?

Backup your data, reinstall the OS, install AV software and scan the backed up data before putting it back, update your passwords and use your PC as it's meant.

I know there has been some good applications posted, but sometimes it's like sticking a bandaid on a lost leg.

Malware gets rid of threats once I`ve manually scanned and rebooted the PC.

Looking for a free firewall to prevent these coming in to start with.I appreciate that reinstalling stuff with new security would do the trick but will wait until the hard-drive gives up the ghost before going to the trouble/time&expense of buying installation discs etc.Just after a stop-gap so that don`t have to resort to safe mode....which limits access to several computer functions.

Yes, but does it come back after a restart?

If it does, it usually means that a core service/system has been compromised or replaced with malware - it'll come back after each restart. This I'd 100% reinstall, anything less you are playing with your own safety.

Sounds a bit melodramatic, but even if you have a firewall that stops outbound and assuming that it's not disabled by the malware once you've installed it (even if it tells you it is working...), then it's only a matter of time before SOMEONE clicks the 'allow' button to a popup for somethign they don't know and it blurts your details out to somewhere.

Imagine.....it's one thing trying to fix a PC, it's another spending your time stopping your bank details being abused, your online accounts being taken over, your facebook/twitter/whatever being taken over, emails being sent to friends and family causing them untold grief.

It's your choice at the end of the day though.....

I was merrily typing away and trying to replicate the layout of the Malware scan readouts I`m getting,so missed your message pre doing mine.

I`m like a dog with a bone now that I`ve had so much success with wine-o`s Malware.... so onwards and forwards in that vein,for now.

Funny you should mention the sticking plaster on a missing leg analogy....Luckily haven`t got to that stage personally,although I have a dodgy leg I`m working on at the moment.Three traumas incl the latest(3yrs ago)...a dog bite behind knee which has damaged a nerve(according to physio),but I suspect tendon damage. Beagles don`t like me:cussing: All other dogs fine.

Yeah, the email abuse thing would concern me...don`t want that.Deleting 6,000 emails which were thrown in to disguise the illegal paypal/bank activity was bad enough.
All quiet now,happy in "safe mode" at the mo because they can`t get me in there!

Not sure if you saw last message - what make/model (if it's made by an OEM....).

Actually, if you are in safe mode with networking support - it's actually possible to have more issues. Like I said - non essential SYSTEM services, so this might not include AV/Firewall components.........so in essence, you are totally unprotected, rather than badly leaking.

The tower has cybermaxx on front panel.It was probably built up by chap I bought it from.It`s jammed in a corner,I`ll winkle it out and check the back after lunch.Had the cover off to re-lube one of the three fan motors!(if that doesn`t prove I`m tight......)but cannot remember any names on internal components.
