As a kitchen fitter who designs a fair amount of kitchens each year I'd say I have a pretty good idea how to go about it. As I said there would be other ways around your problem.
It's your kitchen and you can do what you like with it!!! But from a resale point of view it will put some people off that are not prepared to compromise as you are. But it's your call far be it from me to make you do anything.

no compromise on my part... the boiler's only just gone in and i told him to put it at that height as i wanted the cupboards set at the same height as the extractor. I could have gone lower but that would have meant a bridging unit for the extractor which i don't like. As for the resale thing - at this point in time it doesnt really factor into my thinking and if it does in the future the cupboards can be lowered, a bridging unit bought and the boiler boxed in differently. Probably a day's money for the carpenter and the cost of the bridging unit so in no way prohibitive for either me preparing the house for a resale or the buyer should i choose to leave it as it is. Instead it may be that they like having the open shelves design and consider it a selling point - probably not but maybe.
