Unable to instal drivers
Hi all,
I’m using Windows XP home addition.
I have a Canon LIDE670U scanner which I‘ve had for a few years – running perfectly until last week.
Every time I try and use it, the message tells me that it is unable to open the Twain source.
I have spoken to Canon support and have dealt with 2-3 different people and now Canon say it’s a Microsoft problem?
Basically, I removed the drivers and then downloaded and installed the new drivers and toolbar from Canon’s site. The drivers are there but I am unable to get them to talk to the machine. It comes up with the Code 19 Registry incomplete or damaged message.
I have tried to install them via the Device Manager. They are shown under ‘Imaging Devices’ and has the yellow circle with the black exclamation mark. I try the Hardware Wizard and it does not install using the automatic setting. I then try to install via the list or specific location option. I navigate to the file and select it but the ‘OK’ button is ghosted. ???
I did a Google search and found someone on another forum who appeared to have had the same problem with a different make of scanner. The problem appeared to have been solved by removing the low and high filters.
The instructions given consisted of 21 stages. Stage 16 was to find a certain key in the Class section of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. The key mentioned was for the specific type of scanner that was causing the problem. I have about 30 of these keys in my relevant folder; I guess the question is…which of these keys refer to my Canon LIDE670U scanner? If I could ascertain which one, then possibly, this may be the answer to my problem, don’t you think?
Anyone help me with this please.
Regards
Haydn

Re: Unable to instal drivers
oioi!
Which bit of software have you downloaded?
If it's the drivers, have you ran the .exe and unpacked them?
Also, on cannons website, I notice there is a specific package that contains the TWAIN driver - TWAIN Driver - N670U Scanner Driver Ver. 7.0.3.1a_xp (Windows Vista32/XP/2000)
Whatcha got?

Re: Unable to instal drivers
Hi,
Yes I've downloaded those that were shown against my scanner. These were also the same drivers that Canon wanted me to download and install so I know that they are the right ones. They have also been unpacked and they are sat where they should be but they won't install

go to the registry key listed in your instructions, which is probably HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class. Look through each key. In the right hand pane of the registry editor look at the (Default) and Class values for something that could be related to your scanner. The one you're looking for could have a (Default) value of imaging and the Class could be Image.

Re: Unable to instal drivers
Have your tried this? http://weblogs.asp.net/jeffwids/archive ... ource.aspx
I know it is a different model but it could indeed be related. I also know this is for vista/7 but it is pretty much the same to follow.
If not I would first try a system restore to a date when you know the device was working (only if you don't mind losing any software installed after this date).
Also have you tried a different usb lead and port on the back of your PC. Sounds silly and your problem does indeed look like a twain issue but scanners are funny devices and you would be surprised how often that works.
If none of these work then a fresh start may be the best option (not a total rebuild but a removal of all canon software and registry entries).

I don't think it's a virus because I have installed several updates for one thing or another since this has started.philprime wrote:Can you install any other drivers or updates late time I had this problem it was down to a virus! I ended up had to reinstall windows

I tried that link but it made no difference so I went back in and removed the information. I'd thought of a system restart but in all honesty I just can't remember the last time I'd used it so I wouldn't know where to restart from - so annoying.
I've used all the ports to see if it made any difference, but alas, no! The usb lead looks like no other I'm using...it looks to have like a cotton reel about 4" below both usb heads??
The only thing I haven't done is remove all Canon software. I'd removed everything referring to the scanner but I have a Canon printer and that's working fine, so I don't want to uninstall that in case it goes t*ts up and won't reinstall.
Many thanks for trying

Backup the registry key in your screen shot with the lower filter. After backing it up delete the lower filter key, reboot and see if you can scan.
