Bathroom Tiling and vinyl floor - please help!

Post by hatch1982 »

Hi all,

I am in the middle of renovating my bathroom, in the old layout the room was only tiled around bath and sink with plain walls and skirting on the rest. I have removed the old skirting etc as I want to tile all the way round floor to ceiling and have tile effect cushion/vinyl with no skirting.

I just wanted to know whats the best way to do this, ive had a few ideas:

1. Leave half a tile all around bottom, install hardboard and vinyl floor and then finish off tilling down to the vinyl?

2. finish the tiling and then have the hardboard and vinyl installed up to the tiles?

3. Use some sort of trim around to finish it off?

Any help with other ideas or how a pro would do it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! :-)

Hi Hatch :welcome:

Conventional method would be to complete all your tiling then finish the floor. I can see where you're coming from regards installing the floor first, then the last row of tiles. However, either way you would need to apply silicone around the perimeter where the vinyl meets the tile regardless of the order you do it in so there won't be a great deal to gain from leaving the last row of tile and fitting the floor first.

Depending on the time and care taken, you could have an equally good finish whichever way you did it. This is also relevant regards the trim. Whether a trim is needed or not is dependant on how accurate you are cutting the vinyl.

Hope that helps :thumbright:

Will need to do similar myself sometime in the not-too-distant future.
I've been planning on running the vinyl under the bottom tile a few mils, mainly because it means I don't have to worry about cutting it perfectly to size!
