Minimum for floor is 15mm as per BS5385 but is fairly hard to get hold of so most opt for 18mm. However if the floor is deflection free you can use tile backer boards at a minimum of 6mm. You will need to provide an expansion joint at the change of substrate though.

Is the expansion joint needed for the ply as well or just the backer boards?

for the ply as well.

If you go down the ply route then the ply needs to be primed on the reverse as well as the face. My option would be to opt for tile backer boards unless there was a very specific reason to use ply.

Only thinking that it would be cheaper, I will investigate the cost of the backer board

thanks

Thats cool, to be honest its got to be tiled under the appliances so 6mm would mean i dont have to raise the kitchen as much as with the ply.

what do you stick the backerboard to the concrete with
