I missed the original post....back pain is nasty!!!

Back/knee pain is one of the reasons I'm loosing weight.....I think I've got a tipping point where neither of them can take it anymore. If I put a heavy bag on, it's screaming agony and my knees go from under me.

What's caused it?

I didnt post up before now
Simple task of getting a box out of the van,my foot slipped and stupid me tried to save the kit rather than letting it go
Felt like an elastic band twang in the base of the spine

My mate had something similar.....years back and it's still on-going, not that yours might....

He has 6 bikes (downhill, road, mountain bike, hardtail, jump, BMX, etc) and had to stop riding them all - must be 14k's worth of bikes in total just sat there....He can't bring himself to sell them.

What's caused it?

It's your spinal disks BG. I had to take a year off work as I crushed 3 disks and one ruptured. The pain is caused by the sciatic nerve that runs from the spine, past your hip (any pain in the top back part of your hip?) then down your leg. Pain in the knee area is symptomatic of it.

Mine was caused by constantly carrying heavy bags on my shoulders and climbing on/off boats all day. It ruptured when I went to turn around but had my lower legs trapped - only the top part of me turned - then I went white, puked and had to crawl home. The pain....

Anyway, because my injury was misdiagnosed I carried on working under pain killers, making the whole lot worse than it should have been hence the year to recover.

Doctors constantly advised exercising the back! Fcuk that.... I stayed horizontal for two weeks before I could even move again and ate painkillers like candies.

BTW get dihydrocodiene painkillers - they are the best for the pain.

It's canny's discs that are shot....I'm just fat!!

I had a drawer full of dihydrocodiene, diclofeniac, codine and some other stuff too after my motorbike accident. Didn't take any of it, but each time I went to the docs/hospital they gave me countless boxes more. I tried one once and just slept for the whole day.....chucked 'em away.

How's your back these days?

Thanks for asking My back is as good as I'd expect - I only have trouble when doing things I don't want to do (don't let Mrs k_e read that).

Since I've managed to cut/collect around 300 logs (each over 1m in length and around 10-12 inches diameter) over the last two months I really can't complain! The pic shows the pile at the 200-ish level.....

What do you intend to do with all that wood?

Canny, hope your back gets better. For the past week, I have been suspecting that something might be about to happen to my back? It might have to be my constant lifting of boilers on my own. Last one was a 42CDi. I think I need to get someone else to be lifting the boilers for me.

It's our supply for the woodstove - our main source of heating for the house. We're trying to get at least two seasons worth of wood before our licence runs out. Not bad for £50......

Bad times Canny..I popped a disc when I was 20 playing golf..15 years later I get grief on a daily basis..

Relate with KE's sciatic nerve, I couldn't lift my leg more than a foot in front of me, but haven't really had a problem with the nerve for years.

All this talk of pain suffering and nerves is beginning to 'freak' me out!
Does anyone know any reliable insurance that one can take to cover for any such eventuality? That way, a bt of income comes in if one is not working due to illness? I know there are quite a few insurance companies out there but suspect for a self employed, they'll take your money & scrapper, telling you you didn't read the Small Print?

There's plenty of insurer's that will cover loss of earning for self-employed kintangoman. They'll probably send you for a medical and request doctor's notes (not fully sure on that one) and any degenerative back issues, like disc problems, won't be covered, along with anything else they find.

Last time I tried to get cover, if I remember rightly, they wouldn't cover me for back issues (due to my past) or knee issue due to my trade..

IMO if you're a tradesmen that can't get cover, start thinking about alternative means of income to run a long side what you do, just in case.

Thnx Wes, I think I'll have problems with any medical/insurers who request for Doctors notes as this will show I have complained about back pains and that I have had issues with my knees?

Yep. Joiners and plumbers are in the same boat - insurers don't want to cover you for back and knee problems because you spend so much time on your knees. But enough of my personal liff.............
