Carcass thickness vs hinge sizes

Post by kellys_eye »

I understand that kitchen carcasses come in 18mm and 15mm thicknesses but does this mean the door hinges differ? If so, can anyone recommend hinges for 18mm doors?

It is the mounting plates that are varied to suit the thickness of the carcase. The mounting plates for 12mm carcases are 3mm thicker to keep the hinge cup position in the door in the same place. So the plates are usually marked 0mm and 3mm, well they are for Blum stuff :thumbright:

Thanks DWD - that makes sense (sort of  ) Can you recommend a drilling template? I'm confused over the distance the hole has to be from the edge - the forstner-drilled hole that is.

Have a look at this Blum PDF www.blum.com/pdf/BUS/1046_hinge_b/1046_hinges_b.pdf which gives you all the griff.

I drill them by hand - centre @ 22mm from the edge - I pilot them first with a 3 mm twist bit so there's no errors with location of the stubby point on the 35mm bit I use.
One day it will all be firewood.

+1 for 22mm.

Still some confusion - I can't, for the life of me, see the difference between the setup for a 15mm carcass and an 18mm carcass. The hinge on Scr3wfix don't indicate whether they are for 15mm or 18mm carcasses so how do I tell?

Is the hinge mounting hole (the 35mm hole) drilled at 25mm in instead of 22mm in this case? :dunno:

Have you got a couple of scraps of timber to have a practice on? It's the easiest way if you're not sure.

If what dwd says is correct about the different thickness mounting plates (and I'm sure he is) the hole will still be the same because the extra thickness mounting plate makes up the difference from the thinner carcass.

If you put the hole centre @ 25mm instead of 22, the edge of the door will overhang the carcass by another 1.5 mm- you'd need to go the other way - but I'd expect the hinges to be for 18mm carcass anyway: I often use them on 18mm mdf cupboards and I've never had one supplied that wasn't intended for 18mm material.
One day it will all be firewood.

hmmmm..... using the hinge on a 15mm carcass to hang an 18mm door (don't ask) works just fine using a 22mm marking point for drilling but mounting an 18mm door on an 18mm carcass using a 22mm marking point leaves the door too far over to one side - basically 3mm too far. This is why I think shifting the drilled hole to 25mm will return it back into place.

Like I've already said though, none of the hinges I've seen for sale indicate anything at all about carcass thickness so, based on this, the hinges are therefore identical (?) for all carcasses/doors and only the drill pattern changes.

:dunno:

I'm off to practise on some scrap.

I always use Blum fittings and they do have the different thickness mounting plates so the mortice holes in the door stay in the same position for both carcase thicknesses as the correct mounting plates even it out. I use this firm http://www.manddonline.co.uk/index.php? ... 20a&page=2 you will see the 0mm and 3mm plates. Buy clip on hinges with the clip on soft closers. This firm are quite cheap compared to many. :thumbright:

Thanks again DWD..... I'm in the ball park but you're heaping confusion upon this worthless mind of mine  . I take it I need 0mm for the 18mm carcasses (they refer to this as cruciform spacing - new to me) but what is the 'horizontal', '9.5mm' and '18mm' cranked boss assembly spec??? How do they affect the way the door fixes/opens?

Any idea why Scr3wfix sell 'just hinges' with no spec as to door/carcass thickness? I take it to mean they are suitable for 'any' door/carcass :dunno:

Well I guess it is okay if you are going to drill the door mortice yourself as you would use a centre to make it right. I used some Screwfix soft close hinges pack on a bathroom cabinet I made and I think I did a test piece before drilling the mortices to ensure I had it right. Not sure how thick Contiplas is that I used for the cabinet. That is why I usually use Blum stuff as it is consistent.

when you drill a hole in a door for the hinge most off the strength is from a tight well fitting hole the screws do very little
if you have a one part hinge they can be half hinges [2 per panel ] around 7mm overlap or full hinge at around 13mm overlap
usually they have enough adjustment in the hinges[adjustment screws] to accommodate 14-18mm
