Kitchen project inc. 1 wall in and 1 wall out

Post by pjl83 »

I thought I'd start a project thread on the new kitchen adventures in the hope that it will inspire me to keep going and get it done!

This is how we got it -

It's very small and very very dated (as is the whole house!). There is a single door leading to a small dining room.

That's was my first attempt at bricklaying and I'm happy with that so I'm going to be tackling most things myself (and the mrs of course)

Along with help from others where I can get it. I'll be using a plumber for the boiler, heating and gas feed to kitchen and a plasterer to do the final skim when we're ready.

More to follow........

Fair point. They pretty much fell off though. Didn't smash at all.

Just about finished the rip out now. Sink will stay until last minute. Next job is removing electrics from the wall that's coming down. 1 socket, 2 light switches and a water heater switch.

This needs to go soon as it'll soon be in the way. Waiting on quotes.

I've just asked in the building forum. I was sure it was and am fully prepared to install a beam and do it properly. We have informed building control already, but having just lifted floor boards above for the electrics, there's a gap between the wall and joists all the way along.

We'll be sticking with the beam.

Electrics are now all out.

The pull cord is temporary. It now switches the lights in both rooms until the rewire.

Definately get some eye protection, i now have an eye condition that is caused by rubbing your eyes definately contributed to by one of my first jobs in the eighties when eye protection wasnt something you though about.

Fair play to you for tackling it yourself,we have done the same on our houses. The brick laying looks good to me,something ive never got the hang of.

Don't go with the Belfast sink.

Trust me, when they are incorporated into a bespoke unit they look very nice, but the Howdnes unit makes the whole thing look 5hit.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I've seen a few Belfast sinks and I like them. More importantly, the mrs likes them too! Lol it's the first thing that will go if we need to save a few kid. Not had the quote yet so fingers crossed.

Progress has been halted this week. To get the boiler moved I need up board the loft. I also need to rewire the upstairs lights and install a new aerial before we board the loft so that's what I've been doing!

If, you can do without the sink unit and it's in the way, you can always take it out, but put the taps back on the pipework so you at least have water. Can save you a bit of time when installing the new kitchen as any alterations to the pipework can be done just before installing the sink unit.

Sadly it has to stay for now. We'd be washing pots in the bath if it wasn't for that sink.

All the lighting has now been rewired. It turns out that although there was 2 breakers in the consumer unit marked upstairs lights and downstairs lights, they were linked under the floor in a junction box so we've rewired the whole house lighting now.

We have chosen our plumber/gas man and he can do next week so attention now turns to preparing for him. We'll be doing the chasing out, electrics and loft boarding before he starts. The wall will be the week after that. It will be much easy with that beast of a boiler out of the way!

The glossy walls are proving pretty stubborn! Hard work but at least we've found a method of getting it off - steamer and scraper. Thanks to the plastering forum for the advice!
