Couple of kitchen floor tile questions.

Post by pjl83 »

Hello,

I'm pretty much decided on backing out of tiling the kitchen floor myself and getting a pro in. Is there a rule of thumb for a price per sq. metre?

Also, was wondering if it was best to tile the empty room and then fit kitchen on top or tile last. Tiling last may save on tiles but may make it more expensive to fit for all the cutting involved and I'd need to pack underneath the appliances to keep them level and able to remove in future - any thoughts?

Almost certain we're going for a charcoal coloured ceramic or porcelain tile with a modular pattern.

Thanks in advance.

If you have the chance to tile the entire floor area while the room is empty and the cost is not an issue then go for it, if you decide to tile up to the units then also tile under where any appliances will be fitted so they can easily slide out if needed.

As for costs per M2? :dunno:

As an average price for modular pattern you're looking at £25-£30 sqm although small areas could cost more and larger areas could get a discount. That price would include adhesive but not floor prep such as tile backer boards if required.

Thank you. I think I'm just gonna get a few in for quotes and see what comes back.

It took me 5 days to lay my kitchen floor - approx 32 600x600 tiles. That included cutting, sticking, grouting, cleaning, sealing (porcelain tiles) and all the faffing of having to work around the existing kitchen and move appliances around to get under them.

It was the first tiling I'd done myself and I took my time to make sure it looked good. I'd expect a professional to be able to do it quicker.
If the room is empty I would tile it wall to wall in case you ever decide to change any of the units. It's easier to tile in the open than trying to stick and grout tiles under the fronts of units or under worktops!
