Plaster boarding

Can you paint directly over plasterboard without putting on a skim and if so what does the finish look like - or will plaster board crack?

Also, has anyone used decorative boards instead of plastering what was the finish like?

Painting directly on to plasterboard will look awful, and what about the joints. Not sure about dry lining though, I've never been involved with i!

If you are going to direct bond the plasterboard, i.e with adhesive then you can paint it. But there are a few things you need to do first-

Get tapered edge boards, then when the plasterboard is fastened to the wall you need to tape the joints with self adhesive scrim, then fill the void between the two sheets (where the two tapered edges meet) using some jointing compound and a taping knife. The next day apply another coat of jointing compound and leave to dry till next day.

Lightly sand the join and then paint all the boards with special board finish, after this has dried you can paint it.

I was thinking of the `Decorative Boards` you can buy, which are fixed onto grounds - with marble finishes etc. , Anyone used them?

I once used some hardboard that had a brick pattern on it, is this the type of thing you mean?

Yes, a modern version of what they used in the 70s - a decorative wall board pre-finished in marble effects. Anyone used them are they any good?
