stainless steel splashback in kitchen

Post by petersprings »

Hi all,

Asking this question on behalf of my sister and her other half. they're re-doing the kitchen and are getting a new cooker but want something to go behind it.

as far as they can tell a steel splashback is the best option for longevity and it looks good too. has anyone got any experience with these? are they any good? and how easy are they to install?

thanks

Stainless steel splash backs look very nice they are easy to fit most come with a mdf backboard I normally use grab adhesive to fix to wall

Off the shelf ones are pretty cheap, but look okay.

As above, an off the shelf one will come with an mdf core, just gripfill nice and evenly to the wall.

If they are having stainless hood or cooker, try and get one to match from the manufacturer, otherwise it may be a different grip polish ....a bit anal, but does show in certain light... most stuff is 320g.

As for cleaning, nothing abrasive, and wipe with the grain direction

Thanks for the advice both!

They have a bit of an awkward space by the looks of it, so they're looking around for somewhere to get a splashback cut to size.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Bespoke ones, theres a few options there....

You can get a bit of flat stainless sheet, and attach it to a thin board to space it out to match tiling etc.... or attach straight to a wall....
Other option, is to have a small fold put in the sides of it, to give a nice radiused edge as the off the shelf ones tend to be. Only needs about a 6mm inside fold then a bit of 6mm ply or mr/mdf can be used as a backer, this will be the price of the sheet plus in the region of £20-40, dependant on how many folds they go with....2 sides will be cheaper than 4.

Probably best to find a local sheet metal work place, and ask for a price of a bit just cut to size...
Ask DP1 finish, with polycoat on, specify its for a splashback, any you/they dont want any scratches.

I'd be inclined to ask for 1.2mm thick personally... some will do 0.9mm, and the off the shelf stuff is often thinner still....
Now, with very thin sheet, when you gripfill onto a wall, as the adhesive shrinks, if you just do it in big dollops, you can end up with ripples that reflect the light and makes it look rubbish. If they have a stock of suitable offcuts, it may end up cheaper to have a thicker bit, rather than have them get a sheet in for it.

Out of interest, where are you/they?

Just an idea, as I have used them in other applications, you might get away with a stainless "door kick plate"!

Thanks again for the advice. I've found a place online that does the right size for around £50, with the right finish and it can drill holes if they decide to fix it this way.

Does that sound reasonable?
