Laying Porcelain Floor tiles

Post by diymarkw »

I am considering laying my kitchen tiles which are porcelain 60cm x 60cm. The floor is newly screened and looks level. I intend to use an angle grinder with diamond cutter to cut them. This will be my first crack at tiling so any tips would be welcome.

I fitted 60x30 porcelain tiles to my fireplace using an Aldi tile cutter (!) which happened to work perfectly once I got the hang of it. Granted it was my first ever go at using tiles of this size but my confidence grew quickly. Smaller cuts (narrower) were done using the tile cutter to scribe the line and an adjustable spanner to nibble the edge off! Worked perfectly!

All-in-all I only damaged TWO tiles by incorrect cutting/snapping. I don't think I'd have had as much luck using an angle grinder though........

I would purchase a cheap wet cutter. Cutting in a straight line and dust wont be fun with an angle grinder. Your choice though :)

You don't need an angle grinder for anything other than shaped cuts.

A manual tile cutter will do porcys, even grade 5.

I'd agree...

Unless you are going to be doing a LOT of tiling then a £40 wet cutter is the way to go..sure you could spend £200 plus on a Rubi or whatever, only really worth it if you are going to use it...

Even my electric Rubi cutter with various diamond blades in it can't cut some of the materials that my 5hit electric cutter with a grinding blade can cut.

I think cutting the tiles will only be the start of your problems if you have never tiled and you're going to try laying 600x600 tiles. Are they polished porcelain? have you put a long straight edge on the floor to check that is actually is flat? just because it has been screeded doesn't mean it is flat. How big is the floor?
