Do I need this update?

It's not something I'm aware that I use, but who knows what's chuntering away behind the scenes - not me for sure, but someone must.

.net framework is used by lots of apps and some components of Windows.

To be honest, you should install ALL updates - it wouldn't 'suggest' an update if the core application wasn't on the machine in the first place.

Still....it's not a worry soon, XP suppose and all updates will end leaving you update free. There are two schools of thought on this though (I'm sure there are more, but these are the main ones):

1. Most people will update to a modern OS and continue to stay safe

2. The 'blackhats' and nasty people have been sat on some real nasty/unknown exploits waiting for EOL of XP and it's updates - as soon as the patches stop flowin', the danger will come.

Time to let it die.....

Really and seriously?

XP was released 2001......12+ years ago! Since then, there has been Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and now 8.1

Quite frankly, what are these companies doing and how old is the hardware they are using? There comes a point when productivity suffers due to the environment that people work in.

How many times have you called a call center and been told....hang on, my system is slow or crashed or shite. Probably running something that is older than me.

As for the training center....what ARE they training people on? At what point do they put their hands in their pockets, invest in new systems/software and keep their training relevant and useful to the real world?

Blar blar blar cost blar blar. There are PLENTY of programs for companies and larger corps to join and use to help out.

I for one am glad it's going. It served it's purpose, let it die.

Jeez, why do I listen!

I downloaded that update last night, 69Mb - it then took about a half hour to install everything, during which time my PC was virtually at a standstill.

Fired it up again this morning and there's now 20 new updates, all related to security issues with .Net Framework - about another 150Mb.

Why the heck couldn't they have fixed those in the original update?

They are cumulative updates........if you'd have kept your machine up to date, it would have been months (years) apart, at least! So......shame on you, shame..............

They are security fixes for the update I did last night.

I do keep it up to date - albeit I do it manually rather than allowing it free rein - that just means that Automatic Updater has to ask before downloading stuff- the only thing I don't update is Internet Explorer.

Why not update IE??

IE shares some core components with the OS - I don't understand this selective updating process. Update everything, then if you choose to not use IE, fine.

If there is an exploit out there in the wild that uses an unpatched exploit (called from a script that your browser lets through, for example) then you are vulnerable to it. This could be from a document, bad file - anything!

It's false security.

I never use IE any more, and probably never will, hence I've never seen the need to update it.

I guess it stems from habits back in the good old days of dial up - can you imagine trying to download 150Mb on dial-up?

There also used to be the issue of download limits - I still have those but rarely get anywhere near them and it's only if my nipper is around that the off-peak allowance (huge) gets touched at all.

I've been using the net for best part of 20 years now without a trojan or virus finding it's way to me, maybe I'm just lucky.
