I don't understand this selective updating process. Update everything, then if you choose to not use IE, fine.
If there is an exploit out there in the wild that uses an unpatched exploit (called from a script that your browser lets through, for example) then you are vulnerable to it. This could be from a document, bad file - anything!
It's false security.
