start up menu

New to this stuff. How do I bring up the start up menu as it seems to take a log time for my computer to start, someone told me that there may be things on there that do not need to start up when my computer starts, how can I tell what must start up and what does not.

Windows 7 on the laptop and XP on the desktop both are slow the XP very very slow.

The XP is REALLY slow, because it's old....no?

The bits you want are methods 1, 2 and 3 - don't bother with the registry stuff unless you are happy you know what you are doing. Method 3 allows you to re-enable things if you find you are missing something.

AS for WHAT to disable.......lots of searching and some common sense (if you see a startup item called EPSON printer, you can assume it's a printer related thing - like a quick launch, etc - you can remove this).

The XP is really old yes.

Not being a basher of your machines, but I think it's one of those odd subjects.

By the nature of having a newer faster computer, your old one WILL feel slower even if it's not changed.

If it's STUPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDLY slow, then it can be sorted....do you use it much?

Out of interest, what's the XP machine - make/model.

Due to the age, I nearly ALWAYS find the best bang for buck in performance on XP machines is a memory upgrade. Due to the age, they usually have 512 - 1GB of RAM. Max it out and it'll be like a shot of 'oomph'.

If it's a branded PC (Dell, HP, PB, etc), then go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/advisor.aspx and whack in the details of your PC. It'll tell you a bit of info about what the max you can install, type and cost.
