Aldi today 8/9/13

Post by dewaltdisney »

Fancy a cheap lathe to play with or router table? See https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/s ... september/

Okay, they are a DIY special but great if you have always wanted a lathe to play with. Similarly the router table is a bit basic but for those who have a router and want to go to the next step this is a good buy.

If anyone buys, come back and gives us an opinion please :thumbright:

unfortunately the hitch base is around 170mm so greater than the 155 mm it can take
also suspect the router will be longer than the legs :dunno:

Never tried a lathe, looks like good fun.

Wish I had the room, and the time to learn :)

As for the router table, I think it was on here somewhere a few years back where someone found that the ALDI router, doesn't fit in the ALDI router :)

They might have fixed that problem by now.

I have an ALDI router somewhere, it was my first, did a good job, but I think the spindle lock broke on it, so now it's stuck with a bit in it.
Once I find it and blunt that bit, it'll go in the bin. Still, for the price it's pretty good.
I am not a pro.

I actually got one of those routers / tables a few years back... I ended up putting a lidl (parkside) bigger router in the table eventually as the plunge broke on it and now I higher and lower it with an old windy car jack ( had to make a solid base for it)... I don't use the side tables though as they are flimsy but if you need to grove something or do a round over on a length this is perfect with the right router bits. As for the router I love it... I got sick of taking it out of the table so often hence making the other router fit with a small amount of grinding.

I use this router mainly for cutting out for hinges, it is light weight and powerful, I had always used chisels and once I chisel the outer line this cleans out the middle in seconds and makes it perfectly flat, same for lock faces and plates. would DEFF recommend!

They have loads of router tables at my local branch of Aldi(Trowbridge) reduced to £9.99. The table might be rubbish but I notice they come with a STOP! button thingy and built in socket. The cheapest I have seen these anywhere is £13.40 so if you are thinking of making your own table and needed one of those safety switches, one could buy one of the ALDi tables, chuck the table away and it would STILL be top value!

They also have a big pile of the ALDI routers 1200 watts 8mm collett(I presume) reduced to £20.00

I was in Aldi today and saw those routers. Bearing in mind I will hardly ever use it, do you think its worth £20 for the odd time I need to fit hinges etc?

Well I thought bugger it and got one from Aldi £24.99 - and I tell you what, I'm impressed so far.
Its nice and smooth, nice slow start, multispeed, 3 different collet sizes, even the adjustable fence thing (novice routerer  ) doesn't look as cheap and nasty as I'd expected. I reckon if I make my mum a couple of picture frames for christmas it will have paid for itself !!
I did follow your advice too and went out and bought a set of Trend CTC bits for £30 from screwfix.
Just need to learn how to use it........my yard is now full of firewood with strange shapes cut into it!

You're meant to just be able to put your piece of wood on it then rout round the edges etc, no clamps required.

Never tried one though.
