Your computer is infected with a virus

Post by Laird »

A gent from the Indian sub-continent called to tell me that my computer is infected with a virus, and he would like to fix it for me.
I asked him where he had got the information from. He couldn't tell me, and he couldn't tell me what company he worked for.
The next step would have been for me to log into his website and then he would have made sure I had a virus in my computer.
I told him to go stick it up where the sun shines out.
I suppose there is a lot of this bloody nonsense going on, and it annoys me that they can run attempted scams of this sort.
Anyway, I've got Kaspersky virus protection and as far as I know it works.

I don't answer the phone unless *call display* tells me who it is - even then I don't answer the phone - I leave it to the answer-phone or give it to the wife. :-)
One day it will all be firewood.

I'm with Big-All.
I ask their name and ask to speak to their company supervisor.

However, I also have an answer phone, if they don't start to leave a message I ignore.
My phones also annunciate the number calling if it's withheld or unknown I ignore.

My daughter once picked up one of these calls and putting on an Indian accent pretended she was his aunty then passed him to her cousins for about 10 mins of garbage pretending to know him.

It was hilarious watching them

I've had a couple of these - I just tend to keep them hanging as long as possible - I managed 12 minutes once before I told him I didn't have a computer - at which point he hung up.

They are quite common, I just act dumb (not hard I hear you say) and eventually they give up...

Snap! I had one a few months back. I kept pretending i couldn't hear them and to repeat things. I was sat down with a beer so thought it was a bit of light entertainment and wasting their time so they weren't trying to rip someone else off :thumbright:

Well, got a call yesterday. It took FIVE attempts for the ''idjieot'' to hear me? It was an 020-7...-.... number, so I assumed it had to do with my van repairs. When he finally could talk, I worked out English was not his choice language.

''I got your number from a 3rd party and wanted to know if you want the Capital One card as one can be sent to you right away?''

Yes I do, I replied. I take it you have my name and number? Anyways, I managed to keep him 'hooked' for a good 35 minutes. He actually believed he had me conned. I gave him a name and address as well as bank details of a ''bailiff'' who had attempted to rip me off but failed. Oh, it was fun.

I do give them a hard time though. My favourite are the ones from Africa who say they have $60M from a dead father etc and want to share it 60:40. I email back with all the details but say I want the share to be 50:50. I tell them I am set to do the transaction and if they are interested, they should call me immediately. I had so much fun with one of them and by the time he realised, he was raving mad. ''Do you know how much this call has cost me?'' Errmmmm, it should not cost you anything as you say you are calling from the bank where you work. Then the swearing began

There's been a major alert today of a computer malware aimed mainly at businesses, but who knows who's going to receive it? It contains an attachment which if opened, encrypts all of the files on the computer rendering it useless. It displays a message on screen telling the user they need to deposit 2 bitcoins (worth about £530 odd) to supply the decryption key. They don't supply the decryption key.

Joiner, after reading that advice of yours, I am even too scared to click the link you provided to see exactly what it says. No offense as I know your intentions are good and genuine as always, but I'm shytting myself now :B

This particular scam will come from opening an attachment to an email, other problems can come from clicking on unknown links but a decent anti-virus will warn you of those (and should stop the link from opening).

Here's a helping hand for your current rectal problem.

Kintango, the link is to the BBC website. Opening the link won't cause any harm to your computer. I've had to warn my dad this morning about the email attachments though. He's not that computer savvy. He phoned me up the other evening saying that he was on a website, and a popup window had opened saying he has to download "Windows Drivers Update". I asked him to read exactly what it said and he replied, "It says, download windows driver update, now and keep all of your computer drivers up to date. Your computer will run faster and better than ever before.... A Microsoft registered company.

Yeah right.   Told him to ignore it... In the past however, he's downloaded and installed all sorts of nasties, just because a popup window has told him to. His last computer eventually ran slower than a tortoise on temazepam.

Joine, the link you posted is supposed to help enlighten me (sorry, us) about the problem but it seems to be having the reverse effect on me.
Now ajay knows I am scared, he is trying to get me to wipe my bum with some crude material that is only going to cause me pain :angryfire:

Careful doing this chaps!! The companies that call you can sometimes have an instant premium line diversion on them. I got charged not long back, spam-phone-number-charged-my-mobile-account-t68633.html .

Happy scam dodging :-)
