You may (or not) have seen my post in computers, well the long and short I have got a new TV (Two If I am honest)
Hasn't TV technology come a long way? The bloke was showing me this huge Tv (seen big tvs before, nothing new there, but this one connects to the internet via wi-fi (not seen that before) and it has "apps" (like some phones do) But the bit that impressed me was how you can select the apps, he was waving his hand in the air (Yes, before some one says it, I suppose you could wave something else, but not in a shop full of people) and to select the app you close your your hand making a fist. He then showed me how its done, there is a camera on top of the TV following any movement (it can show that too)

So, what technological device / gadget has impressed you?

I'm not much of a gadget person. I don't have a TV or a stereo and watch things on the PC instead - was never really that worried about HD or surround sound and stuff like that. A good movie is a good movie and no amount of technical wizardry will make a shyte film any better. I don't have any kitchen gadgets: no microwave, no bread machine, no mixer, only a hand blender which gets used once in a blue moon. I have an old Nokia, nothing smart about it.

But I really do like my Kindle. Living abroad meant access to good reading material was quite difficult unless I wanted to spend a fortune on Amazon (and postage) and I hate reading stuff on the PC, so the Kindle really reignited my passion for reading. It's great being able to read big books without get finger ache from holding them, nice to be able to boost the font size now that my eyes are getting older, and really handy to be able to pack it with loads of books when I go away without adding weight to luggage (and meaning if I don't like one of the books, I can make sure I have plenty of alternatives). All classics, in fact anything out of copyright, you can find for free. It's only good for novels really, reference books I still prefer to have the original as it's easier to flick through.

Not the most fancy of gadgets, but definitely the one that's made the biggest difference to my life.

My phone,Nexus 7 and laptop is the only electrical gadgets i own ,i still cant use them to there full extent,just figured out how to get MP3's onto my phone

This samsung tablet has turned my life around.It's my first computer as such,have used p.c. and laptops previously but could barely operate them then bought this tablet last year and never looked back...sped into the twenty first century in 12 months

And the really good thing (I think so) the bigger tv can show mp4's from the memory stick plugged in the back. The smaller one can only show jpeg's

Haven't got them.

Seriously. When I rewired the house we chose non switched sockets in most of the house, also from the picture of the TV (earlier post) guess where the socket is. Yes behind the "thing" the TV stands on.

I was considering buying a "multi socket for computers" The idea is when the computer is turned off it turns off all the other sockets. But I don't want to spend money if it will not work, since its a TV I am plugging in, not a computer (and as I said the TV unlike a computer has no off switch)

I even looked at a remote control adaptor. You can see it HERE But then I thought

1) Its another remote control to not be able to find.

2) Its radio NOT infra red, so I can't get my "one for all" remote to operate it.

3) The adaptor will still be on, even though the output is off.

So it looks like I am going to have to get a 4 way extension socket with switch and mount that behind the TV's. No point in changing the socket to switched as I still will not be able to reach it.

All these amazing advances in televisions and they still haven't managed to produce one that automatically turns the sound down in the adverts.

Or, better still, to cut out the adverts altogether.

I could be wrong SE but I think it's just the standby button now a days...I think they've advanced some what in power usage when a T.V is on standby now. What does the manual say??

I've got a big fancy Samsung with internet an all that and the internet is pretty rubbish on it really...It struggles but I can see it's probably going to be the future as they improve...No more thigh nerve damage as laptops dwindle away...Just one big techno brain of the house. If anyone else wants to watch something different, they can use their palm top, notebook, kindle, mobile, tablet

I had all ready read the manual, but I still don't "get it" I want an on / off switch.
If the TV is in standby it must have that electrickery in it, I want to be able to go to bed / out knowing it is 100% off, why can't TV makers install an on off switch.

I am getting a 4 gang socket with a switch at one end. I will be happy then.

Couldn't find wifi dongle for TV, ordered one from ebay, arrived today, its in the bin now. Tv can't see dongle, PC sees it, but mini cd with driver is blank?

Have now ordered 20 m long LAN cable from ebay for £1.73 including postage

Yea, I bought a Samsung dongle to make sure the compatibility was ok...Worked but only for around four months...On LAN cable now and it's fine. I wouldn't expect to much from it though SE. It's nowhere near the same as a PC (Unless they've had some leaps over the last year, which wouldn't surprise me).

So annoying that after paying for a Sky subscription (Lady M's idea) they have even more advert time than ITV.
