First off....Happy New Year....I hope 2014 is a prosperous year for all!

Done some more work on the cherry mantel. Installed some hidden brackets onto the concrete lintel using M6 x 75mm lg concrete bolts.



Then made a plywood template to ensure I knew where the 4No. hidden bolts were relative to the underside of the concrete lintel. I needed to do this to ensure the mantel top is level and also so that it is positioned lower than concrete lintel as this is where the chimney closure plate will be attached to and will butt tight upto the rear of the mantel.



Cut the mantel to length with the chainsaw - still have to finish belt sanding the ends.
Transfered holes from template onto rear of mantel & routered recesses for the fixings. Trial fitted - still to be pushed home another 30mm. The interference fit between the 12mm hole & the 12mm hidden bracket rod will be adequate for holding the Mantel - brackets are very strong. I purchased these on ebay incase anyone is interested. £8 for 4 delivered - "Hafele Concealed Shelf Floating Support Brackets"



View from underside; showing chimney, underside of concrete lintel which the concrete backerboard closing plate will attach too. As stated, the mantel still needs to be pushed further in.



I have purchased some Danish oil, again for ebay!, (Bestwood 500ml) which I plan to apply over the next few weeks.

Also mixed up some natural hydraulic 3.5 lime mortar with sharp sand, ratio 1:3, to secure the existing noggins, which attached to the original vertical battens, & also added more battens where the plasterboard joints will lay.



I have roped in my old man to come and assist with lime mortaring all the brickwork joints tomorrow while we have access to the wall as he is more knowledgeable in this art as he has been on a few training courses over the last couple of years.
Once that is completed then I can start to installing the insulated plaster boarding as I completed the first fix of the electrics yesterday! :)

At long last managed to get some walls plasterboard yesterday & today!!

20mm thick insulated plasterboard on the internal walls.



50mm thick insulated plasterboard on the external walls



Window reveal at top 50mm insulated but the sides will be just 12.5 plasterboard with Rockwell insulation as we want the reveals to be as tapered as possible!



Hope to get plaster boarding finished this week then onto the plastering....need to get practicing!!

More progress over the last few nights, plastered boarded one window wall, just need to trim the plasterboard at the reveal flush with the wall.

Need to install the new window on the adjacent wall prior to continuing with the plasterboarding on this wall.

Plan to dot & dab 20mm insulated plasterboard to the fireplace wall as this is currently just plastered stone. Also going to install secondary drywall insulation fixings:

Currently trying to book a plaster skimming course to allow me to brush up on my skimming skills....just awaiting for the training centre to confirm available dates!

Hopefully will get the room back to a shell by the weekend!

Ordered my wife's Christmas present on Monday!! So the stove is getting delivered this Monday - she is pretty excited! :)

Some progress on the living room! Today I had a plaster down from Glasgow to teach me skimming who runs his own plastering school.

Armed with my new Marshalton 13x5 Permashape Golden Stainless Steel I was sent to work under the guidance of a pro!!

I had PVA'd the walls 5:1 last night. Tapped the joints and added the metal corner tape to the window reveal.

2 coat skim then 3 polish coats. Having tapped in the past helped as I have OK trowel & hawk skills.

We hit one window wall first to give me a chance to learn technique. Picked up pretty fast...

Moved onto the ceiling - oh boy that's hard work! But the pair of us worked at it until mirror smooth!

The last wall (4m wide x 2.8m High) I was left on my own! Sweat was dripping trying to fire the multi finish on.
Kept at it & with each polish the surface came very good! Good sense of achievement to get that on my first day!
