We have just had a new kitchen installed. The worktop next to the unit containing the oven and microwave has a gap between the worktop and the unit containing the microwave and oven.
The installer says that the gap needs to be there to let it expand.
Is this true?
installing worktop next to microwave and oven.

Doesn't sound right to me, do you have a picture?

How big is the gap (in mm) and what is the worktop made of?

By the way, you mention it is next tp the oven and microwave unit, the fact you've mentioned this... does that mean the install has used that as part of his explanation? Some worktops do need a small expansion gap but that is to do with the worktop itself and not because of what it's placed next to

Re: installing worktop next to microwave and oven.
Some worktop manufacturers do stipulate that a gap is to be left when a free standing cooker is being incorporated.
You indicate that the oven is in a tall housing which also incorporates the microwave. The worktop would be butting up to a unit and not the actual oven. I haven't fitted every make of worktop but haven't come across one which needs a large expansion gap.
It sounds like he has cut the top too short and is bluffing his way out instead of dipping his hand into his pocket and paying for a new length.

Re: installing worktop next to microwave and oven.
Doesn't sound right to me. Even if it was a solid wood worktop, it could theoretically, be fitted tight up to the tall housing and allowance for expansion made at the other end. Methinks, the fitter is telling slight porkies.
