Bathroom refurb

Post by bean »

Hiya

Am completely redoing the bathroom next, it's a pretty poxy space literally enough space for bath toilet sink and not a lot else. I thought I'd give a rough plan on what I had planned to do to try and avoid any cock ups. It's presently back to stud work.

Plan was overboard timber floor with ply (as thick as possible) I'm limited by height as toilet is under a window. Then electric underfloor heating, followed by ceramic floor
Tiles.

Bath will have a stud frame built for side panel. This will be tiled. Is it best to use
Ply for boarding or plasterboard/ cement board?

Walls are to be plaster boarded then tiled. Can I tile straight onto plasterboard? Or is it better to use aqua board, there will be an over bath shower at the tap end...

Also the space is soo tight that the bath will hae to be recessed into the wall it is next to. Probably right up to re stud work. Should I put some DPM in between just to protect against any water that does manage to creep in?

Thanks all, re more I get into this the more complex it is...

You can tile straight on to plasterboard but I would recommend that you use either aqua board or cement tile board

Thanks Phil.

I think I'll run aqua board for a foot around bath and up the shower wall for some added protection, ad plaster board after that. It's expensive stuff aqua board.

Is there much difference between that and tile backer board?

One better than other?

Aqua board is bloody heavy for plaster based. I thought it was like cement board...

Cement tile backer is better but but more work involve and costs more

Tile backer can hold more weight of tiles pre sq meter compared to aquaboard

FYI aquaboard is 10.8 kg/m3 and cement time backer is 13.8 kg/m3

Phil,

By aquaboard do you mean moisture resistant (green) plasterboard?

Cement boards that I tend to use are either HardieBacker, No-More-Ply or Knauf Aquapanel

Aquaboard is lafarge. Coloured orange and can be left exposed for 6 months.

So I ended up getting a plaster based board.

A few further questions:

Firstly is this any better than MR plasterboard?

Can I use drywall screws to secure it?

Can I use normal on scrim tape on joints?

Does it need sealing prior to tiling?

Thanks muchly

What is the actual name of the board that you've bought?

Don't now.... Neither does b and q, travis or jewsons so
It seems....??

Having a read on the internet wickes tile panel is better than MR plasterboard you can tile straight on to it.

Can't find anything about screwing it but as it's gypsum based I'd use plasterboard screws

Aquaboard is now made by siniat and jewsons should still stock it
