Goodbye XP

I know that MS are no longer going to support XP, and yes I understand that my PC will NOT explode / meltdown come the day. But I am wondering what to buy next *. I already have another pc with windows something, TBH i do not know if its windows 7, 8 or 8.1, what ever it is its terrible, and it has a flaw where by it updates it self, then un-installs the updates because they don't work (well thats what it says, "Failure configuring windows updates reverting changes")

I was thinking of getting a mac mini.

So my question is, do any of you have a mac mini / what is your opinion of them?

* Based on the fact that the pc must break down / become useless in a year or so?

Get Windows 7 if you can (many places will insist on Win8) or wait until the next iteration of Windows (9 presumably?)

Disclaimer - personal opinion having used Win7 and Win8.

To be honest, I think it's a good thing really. As much as it's nice to see an older operating system still being supported this far on, Microsoft would be good to concentrate their resources on the newer ones such as 7 + 8. Even Vista as let's face it, it's still not COMPLETELY stable..

I confess, I have just got

(and some other bits) Going to set it up here in a while. Never been in an apple store before, very helpful and they showed me how to set it up before I left. (So now I am home it should all work first time)

Mac's do what they do, very well, but you could probably have bought a PC with a higher specification for the same price.

biting the bullet, where is the best place to get win7 64bit? Misco are only flogging 8/8.1 which I'm not keen on & haven't got the money for 2 copies of 9

edit, have found Win7 pro 64 on misco for £116, reasonable price?

Why Pro, out of interest - do you really NEED the features:

- location aware printing
- domain join
- XP mode (which has been retired and you can use alternative stuff anyhow)
- Remote desktop to home prem machines
- Backup over a network (which you can do using other software)

It's about 80 quid vs 116......

Do you need to join a domain or some of the other features?

I use Home Prem on most (except my work which is enterprise and supplied) and that's enough for me.

It's your cash, but it's mainly just one of those XP hangovers....must have proooooooooo.

The market share changed dramatically when Windows 7 was released as the stigma of not having pro (and some of the features that were nice) were included in home prem.

the COA serial will work on 32 and 64 bit. So if you decided you need to change later, then it's just a re-install with the relevant media.

well the transition has been very........

Jr is still trying to get his sound to work, on-board sound not recognised

I had Ethernet driver not recognised, needed Jr's computer to download a driver so I could get on the internet, after about 3hrs of updating I'm back on line

had MS Office 2010 as a promotion through wife's work, now won't let me download again to re-install
