Replacement Hard drive, any good ?

Following on from my other thread.. is-my-laptop-f-cked-t72961.html

Regardless of whether the Disk revitalize works or not, I'll be needing a replacement HD for my laptop as this is the second time I've had a problem with bad sectors...

I figured I may as well get a 1TB drive to replace the old 350GB, having had a look around found this one

Which seems to fit the bill, any comments regarding the make ? reasonably reliable ? Anything better for a similar price out there ?

WD are good, you can save a few £ by going for the OEM version, either WD10JPVT or WD10JPVX (the only difference is SATA II vs III which makes no difference for a mechanical HDD.) With the OEM versions the warranty support is usually only through the retailer. HGST Travelstar would be a good alternative, and some people say Toshiba's are excellent. I don't think you can go far wrong with any of them. EDIT: I already bought a 2.5" WD Blue for a system I'm building soon and plan to add an HGST as well for backup copies of the important stuff (it would be incredibly bad luck to have two drives of different brands fail at the same time.)

Do you really need 1TB? how much of the old drive were you actually using? Unless you're struggling for capacity £60 - £70 on an SSD would be a much better upgrade. Add a new HDD later if and when you need the extra storage space.

If you're totally set on a single large capacity drive, consider a 1TB hybrid drive (mechanical HDD with small SSD cache) for £65-£80 either Toshiba MQ Hybrid or Seagate SSHD.

Money dependant I would seriously consider an SSD instead. Much more shock resistant and thousands of times faster. It will feel like a completely new machine.

Pair it with a cheap external backup unit once a week and you will have the best of both worlds

Don't think I can justify a Solid State drive on a mere "handyman" wage...and part of the idea of the 1TB drive is to take some stress from the HD connected to the telebox page...Mrs. W~o has recorded every episode going of a programme called "Charmed.........

Out of interest wine~o, what kind of things do you store on your hard drive?!?!? as in media type.

The reason i ask is because i store as much as i can 'in the cloud' which i find reduces is marvelous and depended on how you use your computer you could get away with a hard-drive alltogether (as such) and boot windows up using a USB memory stick.

Videos pics (HD)..erm some spreadsheets...that sorta stuff..

And about 50 HD films (no not that sort....)

One more option for you to consider then if the budget isn't quite as strict as the £60 WD from PCworld:

120GB-128GB SSD for £47-£50 (I would suggest Crucial M500 or Toshiba Q series)
+
500GB HDD for ≈£30 (it should be possible to get either 2.5" internal or an external drive)

concurr with SSD. I reluctantly popped a SSD in a cheap laptop. It improved the laptop a thousand fold. I was on the verge of disposing of the laptop as I thought it was at the end of it's life. With the SSD it booted and resumed from sleep a lot faster. Ok I know you're not supposed to use sleep with an SSD - but I can;t help it.

having 1Gb storage is OK if it's your only computer - mine is a spare to my desktop. So I do light stuff on the lappy and a small 120GB SSD is fine for it.

I used SCAN when I built my PC and their Techi's were able to answer a Q that even Asus did not regarding USB3 driver.

I have been using WD drives for 15+ years, I have had only 2 fail in that time, I must of built 500+ machines, steer clear of IBM / Hitachi deskstar drives (aka ibm deathstar)

be aware of the height of 2.5" drives as you can get them in different sizes

Dabs or scan are both good suppliers, as you only want 1 item, scan is cheaper on the P&P and a faction cheaper on price
