White scum on tiles?

Post by Darren666 »

Hi folks,
I'm renting this place and have removed some cheap lino I had laid over the kitchen tiles. The lino was something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Black-Wh ... 554Problem is it has left this speckled white surface on the tiles. The lino didn't have glue, just a grey backing. It was pretty thin stuff and was on for about two years.

It seems like a surface is peeling on the tiles. Scrubbing either does nothing or may worsen it.

Cheers!

Hi Darren, and welcome,

I doubt that the deposit left on the tiles by your 'lino' will be adhering strongly, it's just that it's gone into the fine surface irregularities of the tile, and semi-stuck there. I can't say for sure, but I reckon you could soften and wipe up the deposit with a bit of Isopropyl Alcohol - maybe even with some Big Wipes or Wonder Wipes - Isopropyl Alcohol is what some window installers use to wipe clean the window frames after they've glued on the trims and quadrants - I blagged a bottle of it from some window installers a year or so ago and have found it useful a few times, it dissolves all sorts of things, and smells quite nice (!). I guess it'd be available online somewhere. If you do get some, try it on a small area first, maybe with a little circular scrubbing motion with a nylon-bristled nail-brush, to see if it works - if not, you've still got a bottle of very handy cleaning agent.
Alternatively, you could try just waiting, and see if the deposit becomes dusty and wears away on its own with your ordinary sweeping and washing, over time.

I only looked at your post 'cos I thought from the subject line it was going to be a joke about UKIP MEP's on a wild night out.

Good luck with your tiles.

Lol @ MEPs

Your alcohol worked well, along with additional general wear. Plus we saw in a rental photo that it was pre existing :)
Cheers!
