drying out a wood gutter

Hi All,

I am a plumber and have been for over 30 years. I was once drying out a wood gutter with a blow torch as I needed it to be dry so that I could seal a leaking joint. Unfortunately there was a birds nest nearby and the bloody thing caught on fire, then it spread like wild fire and before I new it the roof was on fire, this was before the days of mobile phones!

I called the fire brigade and they came asap and put the fire out, I had to claim on my public Liability insurance.

The wooden valley in the roof was badly burnt and I had to replace it and lots of the tiles.

why were you (a plumber) doing such a job

wooden gutters always leak UNTIL it rains
wooden gutters were AND are made that way, the most common wood for a gutter is elm

the whole idea of a wooden gutter IS that when it rains the wood expands and closes the gaps and the gutter works perfectly

if a wooden gutter doesnt work call a carpenter, not a plumber
