IE not working

Every time I try and open IE on my Windows 7 laptop I get the message 'Internet Explorer is Not Working'.
Not sure which version of IE that I have. The laptop (Sony Vaio) is a couple of years old.
I have tried resetting IE; disabling IE add-ons and doing a deep scan with ZoneAlarm.
Have also ran CCleaner on the registry with no luck.
Any ideas would be very welcome.

People use it to download Firefox I believe.....

Change your browser to Firefox or Chrome (< alot don't like Chrome but it's done me no hard )

Hi smiffy,

If you have tried reseting IE settings and disabling the add-ons with no effect, it is now time to replace IE - by uninstalling IE and installing the latest version.

Uninstall IE:
1.Click the Start button, and enter Programs and features in the search box.
2.Click Programs and Features in the list of results, and then click View installed updates.
3.Under Microsoft Windows, right-click Internet Explorer, and then click Uninstall.
4.In the Uninstall an update dialog box, click Yes to uninstall.
5.Click Restart now to finish uninstalling.

If have another browser available, navigate to this address to download & install IE 11

Who noticed the flaw in this plan?
How do you get online to download a browser, if you don't have a working browser I hear you ask?
Do the following...

Install IE:
Launch (and configure) Windows Media Player
1.Click the Start button, and enter Mediain the search box.
2.Click Windows Media Playerin the list of results, If this is your first use you’ll be welcomed by a wizard that needs to be completed.

Search for your browser, using the Windows Media Guide
3.If it isn’t already on your screen, open the Windows Media Guide by clicking the very large Media Guide button in the lower-left corner of Windows Media Player.
4.In the upper-right corner of the Guide, type your browser of choice, for example IE11

Click an ad, download your browser
5.Upon completion of your search, you’ll be presented with advertising. Use this to your advantage to hop outside the site.
6.Pick an ad, click it. If it doesn’t take you to the manufacturers site in less than a few clicks, go back and pick a different ad.

Eventually you’ll end up at the desired location were you can click to download your browser.
7.Make a note of were the file is saved, and open Windows explorer by clicking on Start and entering Windows explorer in the search box
8.Navigate to the location where you downloaded the file, and right click the file, from the drop-down menu choose 'Run as Administrator'.

Follow the on screen Prompts to Complete the Browser Installation
9.When the install wizard completes restart the computer.
Start using your new Browser.

Had a similar problem about a week ago, by going into updates and removing the latest windows/IE update it seems to be OK now.

Yep -Wino's right, that update has caused a few problems - the one you want to remove may not be the latest by now, though - so look for update KB2964358 and remove it - I expect Microsoft will be issuing a new improved version in due course.

I'd still use a different browser, though - my own favourite is Palemoon, just like Firefox but without the Google Ads

Thanks for detailed reply.
Got as far as '4.In the upper-right corner of the Guide, type your browser of choice, for example IE11' and ground to a halt.
There is no search facility to type into. Any ideas?

Media Player allows you to browse online stores for content to play within the application, such as streaming radio etc.
By its nature this feature means you need to be able to navigate different sites within media player.

To browse online stores
1. Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Windows Media Player.

If the Player is currently open and you’re in Now Playing mode, click the Switch to Library button in the upper-right corner of the Player.

2. In the Player Library, click the arrow to the right of the Online stores button at the bottom of the navigation pane, and then click Browse all online stores.

If the Media Guide button is visible instead of the Online stores button, click the arrow to the right of the Media Guide button, and then click Browse all online stores.

3.In the list of stores available, click a store you're interested in, and wait for the Player to display the store.

You should be able to access an online store, then using links/adverts within an online store - navigate towards an download for IE. When you have a store open, look for adverts/search options on the site which take you to a microsoft download for IE.

IF you are not seeing any online stores, Media player maynot be finding any sites, this was a known bug outside of US regions, but should be fixed now - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... itpromedia - Windows Media Player 12 for Windows 7 online store when clicked shows "No online stores available"

I will doublecheck the steps tonight, (My work access is severly limited).

From my home PC it works, Just click on sites in Media player until you find a search option and enter IE 11.

Internet Explorer is very good now. It gives better battery life to mobile devices and it's very fast, and tabs can be accessed from other devices through SkyDrive. It's also far better for touchscreen devices due to the Immersive Browser.

Sorry for the long delay in getting back.
Thanks to all of you for your replies especially Gib_Goblin who went beyond the call of duty to try and help me.
Unfortunately nothing that I did could get the laptop back to normal so I had to do a factory reset. Luckily I had backed-up the important stuff before it all went tits-up. Anyway I'm staying away from IE from now on.
