Ah well, I made my case.......
I will continue to 'discourage' my neighbours cats from coming into my garden causing murder, defacating and spraying p*ss on my shed - I have a catapult on the windowsill and a large jar of peppercorns as ammo. It doesn't hurt them, (I am an animal lover, after all) but I have to admit that when they get a pouch full of peppercorns up their chuff and leap 3 foot off the ground in shock, it really cracks me up. Great sport, that, and evens the score a little for the innocent birds.
Alas, my dog - a golden retriever, is far too well trained and well behaved to chase them......

All the years we have had cats (15+ over the last 25 years) they have only taken 3-4 birds, ours are mouser's and ratter's 1 of ours has had 8 large mice this year and a rat

birds know where the cats can get too, so stay up in the tree's and in the bushes

I loved cats until I got a garden. I am sick of finding turds. It makes it hard to cut the grass, if you don't see it, the mower is fouled, and the grass no longer fit to be composted. It is unhygienic and a threat to health. Recently I planted some shrubs, and a local cat took to depositing a present on the top of each one. It was a cat's way of sticking two fingers up at me. Vile creatures.

How would cat owners like it if I left piles of my excrement on their lawn?

Cats are a serious threat to wild birds. Yes, removal of habitat by farmers is also a serious threat, maybe more so. As for killing vermin, I still have mice. I recently watched two mice in my garage boxing, oblivious to my presence. Maybe they only kill vermin in their own garden.

At least with a cat you can play the bagpipes on them.

I wasn't a cat lover, but my now wife has always had siamese cats. Our cat is part of the family, just as our dog was when I was I kid. As many pedigree cats, he lives indoors and doesn't go out. Those that do are usually confined to their own garden by netting. And if you keep their tray clean it doesn't smell, and it's no worse than picking up dog poo.

Preference in pets seems to be as deep rooted as paintbrush preference.

I know what you mean, but in my case it's next doors damned cat.

If I leave the kitchen door or window open a few inches the damned thing is "in like Flynn" cleaning the bacon fat out of my frying pan.

How am I supposed to get a decent slice of fried bread if the blasted cat keeps eating my bacon fat?

Apart from taking the food out of my mouth (almost literally) it means I have to wash the bloody frying pan - ruining the patina I've carefully built up.

Animals (cats and dogs) do what they do naturally - scenting their territory (and others' territory) - so it's somewhat unfair to condemn ANY animal for being itself.

In my experience cats rarely drop their guts out in the open (on the surfacce) - this is something FOXES do though so maybe you're pointing the finger in the wrong direction? I had this problem with urban foxes when I lived in Kent. Cat's mark their territory by spraying - and you can't miss it!!!

But what I find disturbing is that people would admit to want to KILL a domestic pet just because of what is essentially prejudice against them. I 'hate' dogs but would never consider harming one unless it attacked me (thanks DWD for the tip on how to do that too!).

Cats may not BE your 'thing' but it will inevitably be someones pet and, if you're a pet owner, you have strong feelings for them akin to having children so hearing (reading) that someone would be prepared to KILL your pet just for being a cat is past the point of disturbing - those people need help to deal with their issues.

Get real. Grow up. Animals are not there to be killed on a whim or because they are 'annoying' - kill them for food if you have to, kill them because (if) they attack you but FFS just because they have a sh1t ????
