how smooth should a wall substrate be?

How smooth should a wall substrate be prior to tiling- there are some small voids, cracks and remnants of the previous tile adhesive on the walls. What is the the tolerance for smoothness +/-1mm?

Cracks voids (unless they are an inch or more across!) are not a problem but "nibs" and blobs of old tile adhesive should be removed they will cause problems when you are trying to get a level tile finish
