Can this cam be filled with weld?

Post by diggerdog36 »

This is from my son's PW80 motocross bike. It is the damage caused after a few items were dropped into the gear box.
What I need to do is fill the damage and grind it back to a cam! Is it feasible or shall I just buy a new shaft and cam?

Cams are case hardened. I doubt that just welding would ever be strong enough

I call it a cam but it doesn't move. There's nothing rolls over it like an engine cam shaft. Its just used as a back stop.

Unless its stupid money, personally i'd just buy a new one personally.

Why does it appear to be 2colours? Is it a fettled casting?
Looks like it is pressed onto some splines on the shaft?

Welding with some 312 stainless would be an option if you need to go down that route.

Thanks for the replies. The appearance of 2 colours is where the casting has been ground down smooth. The damage also looks 2 shades due to the angle created by the gear that cut into it. I think the cam may be aluminium as I can scratch it with a scribe, does that make a difference to the type of weld??

Yeah, if its aluminium, youd need to do it with aluminium rod...5356 would be the one for that.
Probably a more viable option doing it if its ally to be honest.

Find yourself someone to TIG weld it would be the best bet.

Have you checked out the likes of ebay for a second hand replacement part. You could get lucky and pick one up ..or even a complete spare engine with a different fault for pennies.

Well its at an engineers shop to be filled with weld. He is adamant that it is steel which im not sure! It seems way too soft! Ill get some pictures up tomorrow when I get it back before I start to profile or again!
