Roughneck Big Mutt flooring bully (scraper)
I thought I'd review this as it has proven to be a very useful tool. Last week I needed to take-up a large vinyl floor (circa 4.5 x 6m), fire damaged, which had been glued directly to green chipboard directly beneath. The vinyl resisted every other piece of kit I had or was just so slow to take up. I ended up trying flat pry bars, demolition chisels, hand floor scraper and even a conventional thin bladed floor scraper. Out came the Big Mutt and up came the flooring, cut neatly into 150mm wide strips, although I have to admit it did take quite a bit of elbow grease. The heft of this tool tool, together with the one-part forged blade gave me confidence that I wasn't about to break it. The handle is a thick ash affair with a rather peculiar thinner waist about 3/4 of the way up which actually assists in holding onto the tool. We also used it to pry off 12.5mm plasterboards (double skinned) and to generally scrape floors after the plsterers had been. Over the weekend I took it home t lift some extremely stubborn cork tiles in the kitchen. It was magic!
Pros: Seems unbreakable, solid forged steel head, quality handle
Cons: Long (so not useable in confined spaces), relatively heavy, lack of replaceable blade means that this tool will need periodic dressing with something like a belt sander or angle grinder, price
Overall Verdict; Well worth adding to the tool kit if you need an ultra heavy floor scraper or flooring lifter
Supplier: Toolstation.£22.93

Re: Roughneck Big Mutt flooring bully (scraper)
Well I ended up spending a few hours with mine again, today. We had the screeders in on the job I'm working on which sort of left me with quite a bit of spare time (after I'd knocked-up a table/screw store, breaking-down bench and swept-up at least 3 times) so I got the Big Mutt out and proceeded to attack any and every lump I could find on the floor - mainly dried lumps of mortar from the blocklayers at this stage. Worked a treat and was almost as quick as using a small breaker and chisel, less noisy, but just a bit sweatier! I'm told the exercise will do me good.....

I can vouch for this have used one to remove Altro flooring from a few pub refurbs, by far the best bit of kit so far

We used to use electric floor scrapers when I did office refurbs. As easy as cutting grass. Don't know if you can still hire them. Big wide blade which I suppose oscilated from side to side.

Makita do an actual purpose made floor scraper machine that can be mounted on an long handled housing (Not sure if they do sds scraper bits), also Janser http://www.janser-uk.co.uk/POWER_STRIPP ... t--47.html ...I was actually talking about an sds bit. Your link goes to an impact screw set JK.
Nick - type in google 'sds floor scraper bit', click images and you're away mate If you have an sds drill, an sds scraper bit would probably be more cost effective. Of course it depends on the size of the job at hand. Floor scraper machines can be hired. They range in size from specific hand held floor scrapers right up to commercial sit on jobbies...

Original post corrected, Wes . I've used the Festool scraper in the past (Basically a modified orbital sander on a long pole handle) and multi tools such as the Fein all seem to have tools for the task (although they are so small that the job is really sloooooow)Wes wrote:Makita do an actual purpose made floor scraper machine that can be mounted on an long handled housing (Not sure if they do sds scraper bits), also Janser http://www.janser-uk.co.uk/POWER_STRIPP ... t--47.html ...I was actually talking about an sds bit.
