How do I make an opening in one of the tiles making up the next row, for the metal light box and cover plate? See photo

Hi thanks, I bought an Xtreme 600W wet tile cutter from Argos. Can you go into more detail how you mark it out, set out the tile for cutting?

Easier and safer with a tile blade like this in an angle grinder, to do it with a wet cutter you'll need to remove the safety guard

Just to answer your question, this is what I did:

1) Mark a square/rectangle the size of the back box or plasterboard box on the face of the tile.
2) Drill four pilot (3mm I think) holes in each corner from the front face.
3) Take the guard off the tile cutter, place the tile face down on the spinning blade. The 4 holes are simply used so that you can see that the blade is lined up with a line of the rectangle. Press the tile slowly into the blade so it starts to cut away.
4) As you see the blade coming through the tile you should remember that the cut face underneath will be longer than what you see above (due to the circular nature of the blade) so good to keep checking. If you cut all the way through to the two holes you will have cut past the holes on the decorative face.
5) Turn the tile upside down and cut from the underside to finish off.
6) You only need to cut 3 lines as the 4th will snap off if you have used a tile blade to score the 4th edge.

Some notes

• I am just a DIYer and this is just my made up idea on the day as I didn't have a angle grinder. Darrens way seems more straight forward.
• I tried just marking the tile and just placing the tile face down with any holes but the water soon removed the marking and I was getting dirty water splashed in my face
• As the tile guard is off, water will fling everywhere so you might get wet, best to do it outside and wear goggles

I would just use the angle grinder, less messing about

OK thanks, will see if can get it at a better price on Ebay. Yes, don't want to take the blade guard off, and take my fingers off, same with taking the guard off my 3hp tablesaw.
