Removing Emulsion paint ?

Hi i'm going to be tiling my bathroom in the next couple of weeks , existing bathroom has been half tiled with the upper part emulsioned , I've done the gaffa tape test and it is peeling in areas so i need to remove the emulsion as i don't want to risk any problems in the future , can any one recommend a way of removing the emulsion ? ideas i had are belt sander , sharp scraper , steamer.

Don't use a steamer, every chance you'll end up blowing the plaster..

Sand off as best you can, any remaining paint score lightly to give the adhesive a key.

If you score the paint, what percentage of direct bond do you estimate you would have between sound wall and tile? More than 0.2%?

Then again. you could let the grout hold the tiles up!

Can't comment on scoring/prep. e.t.c. but meths or KrudKutter if you can get it could help shift the emulsion from the tiles.

If you score it enough it'll be fine . Plus the paint normally flakes off if you score enough of it

Kingnewport......How many score lines on a 8'X8' wall do you reckon makes that method fine?

Lets say you do continuous horizontal lines 5mm apart for the whole height of the wall. that is around 500 score lines the thickness of a stanley blade. So you still probably only have 0.2% tile adhesion to a good substrate.

I will believe your....it is fine....., when I stop having to put right 5hite work like that and all the adhesive tile manufacturers say you only need 0.2% adhesive coverage.

You can't skim over unstable emulsion lol. Although you will be surprised how many so called plasterers (just house skimmers in reality) do, which then leaves the home owner paying out again when it blows.
