The make on the box is "Strategy", it was bought by my Dad from QVC several years ago. Was only used half dozen times. Yesterday he charged and briefly tested, but is almost dead today.

Looks like a fairly generic own brand tool as made for argos/b&q/homebase/maplins et al...

If I remember correctly the company that supplied them were based in Birmingham ?? they went by the name of Nu-tool..

The cost of a battery if you could source one would probably be around £40 plus each. I have a Dewalt drill body where it is totally uneconomic to buy the batteries. You would do better to go for the Hitachi drill with two li ion batteries for £99 at Screwfix.

It only take a very small change in battery shape (change in notch position, length, width etc) to stop the battery dropping in the charger. Manufacturers commonly implement this trick to keep their batteries 'propriatory' (i.e. stop you using others and charge you more for proper replacements).

As already mentioned it would be far wiser to purchase a known model with spare batteries included.

my local screw fix has a bosch 18v cordless. 1 battery for £75 quid ish. even if its a lower end pro bosch itll still be better than one of the older unbranded kind of drills.

maybe worth checking screw fix out see what they have in stock

i once had three batteries [argos/challenge 18v lidl parkside drill lidl circsaw] all 3 batteries would fit the drill but all would only charge in there own charger
as said new kit will be more cost efficient

Anyway, thanks for the replies. I've passed on your recommendations. But, he hates putting things into landfill. As this tool has hardly had any use, he's adamant that he'd like to source a battery, even though it may not be economically viable and technology has moved on since then.

Just a a matter of interest, do the cells just die on the old Ni-Cd batteries? I thought that only occurred after so many charging cycles.

batteries will fail with age used or not
imho a battery cycled once every 2 or 3 months will give you greater life than a dormant battery
by cycling i mean run till 95-98% flat then charged
now others will disagree but it works for me this is nicads only
with nmh or li-ions i tend to charge when they are around half charged when inactive or little use
of course in use you charge when they need
