Tiling around bath - grout keeps coming awayg

Post by naziern »

Hi there,

I had our bathroom refurbished earlier this year. The lines of tiles around the bath are quite narrow at around 4cm.

In the corner where tiles meet up with the next row the grout has come away. I re-grouted the area. That was around 2 months and now the grout that I applied has started to crack. I think this is due to dampness behind the tile.

Ideally I'd like to remove the tiles from the affected area and re-tile, however I want to avoid any further water ingress, am I ok applying silicone and grouting over it?

Thanks

You should never grout into a corner, it needs to flex or it'll crack.

Remove the cracked grout with a rake completely, clean the joint with white spirit or rubbing alcohol and apply a bead of silicone.

It's unlikely to be anything to do with water ingress.

I would be worried that you have had workmen in that don't know how to tile and finish off.

Can you post some pictures of the area in question?

May just be as already advised, might not. Hopefully pics will show.

I've attached a couple of pictures of the affected area. Please note the excess grout is my work[emoji21]

Kinell!!!!!!!

I would doubt the whole job of it were all done by the same firm....bath, plumbing, tiling etc.

Tiling is shocking, no comprehension of setting out for one, no knowledge of finishing for two and probably no knowledge of appropriate prep and adhesives for three.

Internals as said, need raking out and silicone applied. Dow Corning 785 is what you need.

Bath looks like it has dropped slightly. The grout line between the first and second course needs cleaning out and doing again. There is a fair chance you have had water ingress behind the tiles at that point, though.

Shame, but unfortunately there are some shabby workers out there.

Here are some pictures of the bathroom when it was done, looked OK to me[emoji15]but take your comments on board and thanks for your advice to silicone. Will it be OK to apply even if there is dampness behind the tile?

Christ they're made an arse of that tiling round the bath, setting out is day 1 stuff.

There shouldn't be significant dampness behind the tile to be honest.

To be fair...it's only around the bath that is bodged..the rest of the room looks a fair job.......

I had looked at a couple of the previous jobs they had done and they had done a good job overall. As wine-o says it's the only bodge the rest of the bathroom has been done well. Plus they were very considerable and didn't take in a sharp intake of breath every time I proposed a small deviation from the schedule of works that we had agreed. All in all I happy with the finished product.

If the silicone treatment does not work out I'll be calling them back!

Proof you shouldn't entrust a bathroom to a handyman

Take a closer look......You may like to notice that the vertical joints are not carried onto the (presume) toilet position, tile trims butt jointed! That is just 2 other in your face signs of a poor job.

I wouldn't mind a little guess that it is tile over tile, too.

Agree it looks like an over tile, there should be gap at the back of the taps big enough for a finger to fit.

Also agree theat Dow Corning 785 is the way to go. Expect to pay around a fiver, you will only need one tube, and a gun if you don't have one.

If by an tile over you are referring to tiles over existing tiles. then I can assure you that is not the case.
Anyway thanks for all the comments.

To be honest I wasn't looking at the trims..I was looking at the tiling set out...overall.... I didn't find it too bad.

Though I should say that another 50/100mm off the floor (Bit difficult to tell from the pics) would have made a world of difference...
