shower enclosure silicon sealing

Post by philnbarney »

Hi to everyone, new here and a litttle help required.

I'm doing my ensuite, had to replace all the plasterboard in the shower enclosure with cement board, coram tray fittted and manufactures instructions are to tile down tto the tray leaving a 3 to 4mm gap to seal with silicon bead. I have also seen some shower enclosures with a vertical run of silicon down the internal corners of the shower enclosure (between adjacent walls).

My question is; is a vertical run of silicon necessary between adjacent walls of the enclosure or is waterproof grout sufficient? Many thanks for the replies in advance.

If you grout an internal corner it will crack, you need to silicone it.

Protip: Dow corning 785 and a fugi set, you'll thank me later.

Thanks for the benefit of your experience, silicone it is. I hadn't heard of Fugi sets but will look into it.
One further question, do you normally seal the joint between the the last row of tiles and ceiling with silicone or is grout ok?

We always silicone.

DIY, you can grout it if you prefer. The rule of not grouting internals and externals is because movement may cause cracking, but this is not always the case. I have feature grout lines at my sisters that are 7 years old and perfect and seen other examples too. I have also seen failed examples, so always best to silicone.
