Light fitting !!

Hi Guys hope you can help. I have bought a replacement light fitting and cannot get my head around the wiring. On removing my old light there was;

Black and red cable together
Two reds together
Two blacks together
Three yellow/ green together

On the new fitting there is only two wiring points, two marked neutral and two marked live? Please help.

Is there no earthing point on the light fitting?

What type of light fitting is it? For example is it a fan light etc.

when you say that the wires are together, what exactly do you mean?
Do you mean they were terminated in the same terminal?

The 2 blacks put into the neutrals

the red wire and black wire put into the live

The 2 reds put into a strip connector and that is it. do not connect into the light in any way

Green and yellows go into earth.

I'm assuming that the extra wire for the live is to do another light.

Does the light you are fitting come on with another light by any chance

The light is connected to an extractor fan.

......and the instructions say that the light does not need to be earthed

Have tried what you said MarkySparky, but nothing is happening (no light comes on and the seperate extractor fan is not running).

Is there no instruction manual with it?

Are you sure there are no other markings on the fitting besides 2* neutrals and lives?

Is there no symbol that looks like a switch ___/ ___ or similar?

There are some very brief instructions which state
' If a wiring loop system is used within your home there may be several cables coming out of your ceiling. Before disconnecting your existing light please make a note which cables it is connected to and connect your new fitting to thses wires.'

There are definetly just the four connection points, two Live Terminals and two Neutral terminals.

It sounds like there is a terminal for the permanent live and switched live on the new light, so that the fan can continue to run once the light is switched off.

The instructions seem very poor!

The terminals in the light fitting-

do the two neutrals wire to the same bit inside of the light or are they definately two individual terminals?

The red and black wire! are they in the same terminal? They are not in seperate terminals by any chance?

If they are seperate put them together into the L terminal and see what happens

Tried to put the red and black wires in the same terminal - still nothing. I am going to rip my hair out soon :!:

Sod it, i have just found a direct replacement for the light that i had originally in my bathroom on Screwfix - so i have ordered it! Can't be doing with that other bloody thing any longer ! Its free to a good home if anybody wants it!

generally a light on a loop circuit will have the following connections

earth - all the earths in a terminal block

Neutral - The loop circuit Neutral (normally 2 blacks) + the bulb Neutral + the fan neural

Perm Live - The loop circuit live (normally 2 reds) + supply to switch (normally red) + live to fan

Switch live - return from light (normally black) + the bulb live + the switch live to fan

There are your 3 terminals on your light! 8-)
