The garage that John and his Dad / Grandad built
So garage is finally finished, had done various small prep bits, laid block work base, ( had kinda been dragging feet due to nice summer weather) then someone phoned the council to complain about "lack of progress" and (while I was digging a soakaway through rubble) that it "looks like a building site" (funny that...it was a building site) so I had make progress PDQ...
All the framework was built on site, walls are CLS equiv of 2x4", roof is CLS equiv of 2x6s, all built on 16" centres (plywood came in imperial sizes)
Learned a lot from this build, a good few things I would have done differently if I was doing it again... but overall I'm pretty happy with it. just needs insulated now.
So photos (apologies they aren't in chronological order as they were taken on numerous diff cameras...so im hunting them down as i go)

Looks like once finished it'll rob a lot of natural light from the downstairs rooms..

Chop:
Cheers was finished (externally at least) just over a month ago...(just can't find the pics), need to insulate the roof though as currently getting condensation on the underside (seemingly a common issue that insulation tends to resolve (bringing a warmed up damp car into it doesn't help either)
wineo: its deceiving due to the angle, the house sits above the garage by several feet, so the garage roof is barely mid point of the kitchen windows at its highest...plus it sits a good 10-15 feet from the backdoor (drying green etc) between house and garage. no change in light, but a lot more shelter and privacy for next summer, should make a nicer suntrap :)

The question on everyone's lips is how many cans of IRN BRU must be drunk to get a towel like that??

Re: The garage that John and his Dad / Grandad built
Hi,
It will be interesting to see the finished pictures but looking good so far.
People are so helpful and how kind of someone to phone the council with an update of your progress?
I believe the best way to add ventilation to a garage is to remove 6" from the door bottom?
Done just in time for winter so hopefully no frozen car to get into.
Kind regards, Col.

Re: The garage that John and his Dad / Grandad built
Ok some almost finished interior photos
Exterior wall and roof sheeting is 12mm exterior ply, given 2 liberal coats of solvent based wood preserver and a coat of water based woodstain (more to come next spring/summer as i Fancy it a bit darker than it is)
Next is some insulation (got a roll of fibreglass loft roll FOC from the old man) and oversheeting the interior
Place is like a bomb shelter, even in the highest winds there is zero creaking/movement.
Lights came from a former dentist office being turned into flats, cost - diesel. Looked up the new price - £20-£40 each. I got 8 for nada.
Got 4 of them rigged up temp till I sort out the supply cable and remember to sort a CU for the garage.

@ stevie thanks for the advice on timbers. Should withstand anything short of a hurricane. ..even then the garage might win. ..
