Can I use paint primer on substrate before tiling

Post by udaman »

Hi all

I have another window sill to tile with slate tiles...

I have read the posts about not using PVA to seal the substrate. It is only a small job and times are hard, so I am reluctant to buy anything if I do not have to. I have Some Zinsser BIN, Zinsser Bullseye 123, and also an almost full tin of International Stain Block Paint.

Can I prime the substrate using any of those?

Cheers

Max

I personally do not know, but if you are supposed to use PVA then I would use PVA, especially if you can get a small tin for less than a fiver. Click here
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

You are NOT supposed to use PVA Someone-else... please read the post...

@ Max, no, none of those are likely to be suitable.

What is the *substrate* you are fixing to ?? maybe a sloppy sand / cement mix might work ???

The substrate is like in this picture:

I was originally just going to lay some quick setting cement compound like this stuff:

and I was going to use it both to level AND to stick the tiles. But I thought that I would need seal the substrate first to stop it absorbing any of the moisture. Just not too sure what to seal with.

At the same time, any thoughts on using that for the tiles would also be helpful. Would it be OK or should i be looking at specific adhesives? I've only got four tiles to do. And they are being laid horizontally (like on a floor) rather than vertically (like on a wall).

Cheers

I'd have thought that for such a small area that a loose mix of whatever (flexible) tile addy you are using would work, spray the area to be tiled with water to control the suction...not a tubbed addy obviously..
