Memory (storage)

Post by kellys_eye »

What's your main storage capacity like? Mine is a 1Tb portable HDD just to get the topic started. I have a server with 1Tb too but I haven't accessed that for aaaaages.

I ask purely because the drive for ever-more storage seems to be declining (certainly in my case) as the stuff I used to download is now so readily available on-line instead.

I got an advert in this morning for 4Tb HDDs (for NAS storage) but I'm either 'past it' when it comes to storage of stuff i.e. I don't do what the modern kids do these days (whatever that is.... ) but I'm struggling to find ways to fill the portable 1Tb HDD I have now and couldn't even contemplate needing more.....

Then again, this is what I said back when I had a 40Mb HDD and dumped all my floppy disks.....

Is it just me?
Don't take it personally......

I too have a 1TB external drive for storage, I keep all my photos backed up to it and any other documentation (invoices, tax records etc) that I wouldn't want to lose if my internal HD suddenly fried itself (like they do), it still has 850gb of free space.

I'm not trying to fill it - it's just there to be used.

My son is far more computer savvy than me but he recently lost a lot of photos when his HD packed up - he thought the had a similar system to mine but the programme he uses to automatically transfer and update stuff had not been operating for some time, I use a freebie programme called *Karen's Replicator* - it's set to operate every day just about when I'm having my dinner and I can hear it start chuntering away so I know it's working. :-)
One day it will all be firewood.

I have a work need for storage, as I deal with lots of downloads that are round 8GB in size x by versions x languages and I'm into the TB realms before you know it.

My daily desktop use are 2x3TB drives for stuff I use a lot
Boot drive is 240GB SSD
Second drive is 240GB SSD
Then I have 2 other drives that are 1TB each

LOTS of external drives that travel with me.

Then I've got a server that's on 24/7 with 3XTB drives in that does music, backup and remote 'oh crap, I need this' duties.

I've got loads of other drives too, but mainly 500GB's and 750's - don't really use them, all wiped and sat in a drawer. Old stuff now.

I'd love to get a stack of 4TB reds for the server and re-do it, but it's like everything - time and money.
